Shame on Art Windsor-Essex for exploiting an employee they are forcing into retirement. An employee who has been recognized provincially for exceptional work at the gallery is forced to retire after 40+ years, due to his position being eliminated and a lay off notice being served. That is not how to recognize and reward a lifetime of service

If you've ever stepped foot in Art Windsor-Essex, you've probably met Senior Officer, Operations, Membership and Visitor Services - Tom Primeau. After 42 years of service, Tom will be concluding his time with AWE. He has worked for the gallery since he started as a security guard at the age of 18. Over the years, Tom's contributions to the gallery have been immense. Supporting visitors, working with staff and volunteers, expertly coordinating events, and warmly welcoming all who visited. We will miss Tom's gentle and diligent kindness in the gallery and wish him all the best!

We will be at the Windsor International Film Festival screening of The Librarians Film tomorrow handing out buttons, stickers and more so viewers can show how much they love library workers!

As an unprecedented wave of book banning is sparked in Texas, Florida, and beyond, librarians under siege join forces as unlikely defenders fighting for intellectual freedom on the front lines of democracy.

Like our librarians, you too can be a hero and defender of intellectual freedom. We recommend starting with hyper-local civic engagement like researching and voting in your district’s upcoming School Board and Library Board elections. Learn more about THE LIBRARIANS and how to join the Freedom to Read movement and see the award-winning documentary in theaters!

📢 Strike Action Begins at Clear Medical Imaging 📢

Today, Unifor Local 2458 members at Clear Medical Imaging have initiated strike action after exhaustive negotiations with the employer failed to secure a fair collective agreement.

“Our members are striking to demand the respect and fair treatment they deserve in their essential role providing critical imaging services to the Windsor-Essex and Chatham-Kent communities,” stated Unifor National President Lana Payne. Key unresolved issues include achieving wage parity, securing adequate benefits, addressing mandatory overtime, and ensuring job security.

The union remains open to returning to the bargaining table and urges the employer to address these fundamental concerns. This action underscores the detrimental impact of Ontario’s healthcare privatization, as workers continue to face unfair conditions. As Unifor Local 2458 President Ken Durocher emphasized, “We are committed to standing firm until a fair deal is reached.”

Unifor Local 2458 represents 130 members across Clear Medical Imaging’s 11 locations in Windsor, Chatham, Tecumseh, LaSalle, and Essex, including x-ray and ultrasound technologists, and clerical and administrative staff.

For more information, please contact Hamid Osman, Unifor Communications Representative, at [email protected] or 647-448-2823.

Happy Canadian Library Workers Day to all of our members, and Library workers everywhere!

The Canadian Federation of Library Associations (CFLA) has designated the third Friday in October as Canadian Library Workers Day.

CLWD is a day for Canadians to recognize the valuable contributions made by all those who work in and for the public, academic, school, government, academic, corporate and private libraries that are integral to our communities.

Canadian Library Workers Day is recognized during Canadian Library Month, an annual celebration of libraries, library workers, and the services they provide to their community

The former Chair of UAlberta's School of Library and Information Science calls appointment of new WPL CEO a "Slap in the face" to the library profession, and the recruitment process "smells bad".

If you agree, let your councilor, the WPL board, and the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Gaming know.

The Windsor Public Library has appointed a new permanent CEO, Jen Knights, who is also the Director of Culture at the City of Windsor. All of this without a public job posting for qualified candidates. This decision raises serious questions about transparency and compliance with the Public Library Act which dictates that the CEO is a library board employee and not a municipal employee. We deserve a CEO that is committed solely to the library and can advocate for our community's needs and values.
