We attract, encourage, and empower female students to pursue careers in STEM WHY WE EXIST?

We create programs that will encourage young women to consider various career opportunities and make informed decisions. We develop partnerships with sectors to offer hands on camps for young women to experiences these job sectors. We help provide the right tools, resources, and mentorship to young women. We also provide parents with the tools to help their children make informed career choices. Consults with companies in various sectors to help them diversify their workforce.

Avery didn’t just cross the Gordie Howe International Bridge—she helped build it. 💜 
From late 2023 to mid-2025, Avery worked on the interiors of the Canadian Port of Entry buildings, contributing her skills to one of the most significant infrastructure projects in North America. 
She installed nearly all the doors and door hardware throughout the buildings, worked on cabinetry and helped create accessible walkways for people with visual impairments—a job that involved drilling approximately 8,000 holes into tile!
It was also on this project that Avery discovered her passion for installing doors and hardware. 
Recently, she experienced an unforgettable full-circle moment when she crossed the bridge for the first time. 
In Avery’s words:
“Being part of such a historic project, especially as a woman in the trades, is easily one of the coolest things I’ll ever do. Being able to point out the things I built and installed with my own hands for my whole life is such an honour.” 
Stories like Avery’s show what becomes possible when women are given the opportunity to bring their talent, determination and skill to the projects shaping our communities. 
Avery didn’t just witness history—she helped build it.

Sometimes, building your future is also about showing the next generation what’s possible.

Meet Pina Longo, Purchaser at Cavalier Tool.

For Pina, her biggest inspiration is her daughter—and showing her that there are no limits to what she can pursue.

Working in an industry where women continue to be underrepresented, Pina knows how important it is for young girls to see women building successful careers in these spaces.

Her advice?
Learn about the opportunities that are out there. Don’t be afraid of the trades. And don’t let a male-dominated industry determine what you believe you can do.

At Build a Dream, that’s exactly why representation and career exposure matter so much. When young people see women working across skilled trades, manufacturing, STEAM, and other traditionally male-dominated industries, we expand their understanding of where they can belong.

Every woman who steps into these spaces makes it easier for another young girl to picture herself there too.

Recently, we celebrated the graduation of our fifth pre-apprenticeship cohort delivered in partnership with the Millwright Regional Council!  
To date, we have delivered five cohorts across three provinces:
💜 Three in Ontario 💜 One in Manitoba 💜 One in British Columbia 
But you might still be wondering: What exactly does a millwright do?

Their work is all around us. Millwrights are highly skilled professionals who install, maintain, troubleshoot and repair the machinery and mechanical systems that keep industries moving. 
From manufacturing and energy to mining, construction and automotive, millwrights can build careers across a wide range of industries. Their work keeps critical equipment operating safely, efficiently and reliably.

Career exploration is about more than choosing between the jobs young people already know. It’s about helping them discover possibilities they didn’t know were out there. 
That’s why, for this edition of Careers You Didn’t Know Existed, we’re spotlighting the UBC Millwrights and the career of a millwright. 
Young people can’t consider career paths they haven’t been exposed to—and meeting the people doing this work can completely change what they imagine for their future. 
We’re proud to continue working with the UBC Millwrights as a Dreamer Day 2026 partner, helping introduce the next generation to skilled trades, hands-on careers and opportunities they may never have considered. 💜

“Don’t let the guys push you around — and take more notes.” 
Meet Lynn Reid, General Machinist at Omega Tool Corp. 
Lynn’s story is a reminder that success in the skilled trades isn’t about knowing everything on day one. 
It’s about showing up with curiosity, work ethic, and the willingness to keep learning. 
From finishing her high school and college classes with some of the top grades in her class to quickly mastering complex software on the job, Lynn has built confidence by continuing to challenge herself and ask questions along the way. 
Her advice is simple:
If you want to learn, people will teach you. Bring the drive to better yourself and keep going. 
At Build a Dream, we’re proud to highlight women like Lynn who are building careers in industries where women are still underrepresented and showing the next generation that there is space for them there, too.

What does opportunity actually look like?

It doesn’t always begin with a job offer, a big breakthrough, or having your entire future figured out.
Sometimes, it starts much smaller.

It’s discovering a career you never knew existed and suddenly seeing yourself in it.

It’s picking up a tool for the first time and realizing, I can do this.

It’s meeting someone already working in an industry who takes the time to answer your questions, share their experience, and make the path ahead feel possible.

It’s gaining a new skill.
Building your network.
Finding a mentor.
Getting support when you’re unsure of your next step.
Or being connected to an employer willing to give you an opportunity.

And sometimes, it’s simply being in a room where someone reminds you that you belong there.

“My advice to my teenage self? Find this career sooner.”

Meet Theresa Nguyen, a third-year Millwright Apprentice.

For Theresa, one of the things she loves most about the skilled trades is that no two days have to look the same.

New challenges, different projects, hands-on work—and a career filled with opportunities to keep learning.

Her message to young people considering their future is simple:
Don’t be afraid.
Do your research.
Take the opportunity into your own hands.

There are so many career paths young people may never know exist until they have the opportunity to see them.
