The "news" that land will be part of a modern-day treaty with the Te'mexw Treaty nations caused a lot of thoughts for a lot of armchair policy experts recently.

But in this opinion piece we hear from a Victoria-area resident and advocate that Reconciliation is nation-building at a time when Canada needs it most.

And it's sound economic policy.

"At a moment when this country is being reminded how quickly an external relationship can fail, strengthening the internal ones is not a concession. It is nation-building," writes Robert Lewis-Manning.

Recent news that the three-decade treaty negotiations with the Te'mexw Treaty Association (Beecher Bay (SC’IȺNEW̱), Malahat, Snaw-naw-as, Songhees and T’Sou-ke) would result in the return of some of their Victoria-area title lands to these nations caused a lot of pearl clutching by armchair experts.

Here, we hear from Victoria resident Robert Lewis-Manning, a Victoria resident and champion of ports, that Reconciliation is Nation-building at a time when Canada needs it most.

It's also sound economic strategy.

First Nations should not be treated as obstacles to be managed. They are rights holders, governments, partners, investors and builders.

Rest in peace and power Joan Phillip, Amshen ❤️ We raise our hands to a life lived well and working on behalf of all Nations 🙌🏽

The family of MLA Joan Phillip, Amshen, is deeply saddened to share that Joan passed away peacefully this afternoon, surrounded by her the love of her life, Grand Chief Stewart Phillip, her children, grandchildren and family at the age of 74. Joan was a fearless warrior and inspirational leader, and we will miss her dearly. The family asks for privacy at this time, and in lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the B.C. Cancer Society.
