September 30 marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a day to honour Residential School Survivors, their families and communities, and the children who never returned home.

It is a day to reflect on the painful and lasting impacts of the Residential School system, to listen and learn, and to recognize that Every Child Matters.

On September 30, the Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation will host a gathering at Cape Croker Park to honour truth, recognize cultural resilience, and strengthen a shared commitment to unity and reconciliation.

Everyone is welcome to attend, learn and take part.

Members of the Town of South Bruce Peninsula Council and staff will be attending this important gathering, and we encourage members of our community to join us as we listen, learn and continue our shared journey toward reconciliation.

Please be advised that necessary maintenance work will take place at Berford Street and George Street beginning Monday, September 14.

To safely complete this work:
• The southbound left-turn lane at Berford and George will be closed
• Northbound traffic will be shifted over
• The sidewalk along the back side of the work area will also be closed

These temporary closures are expected to be in place from approximately 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day for at least a few days next week.

We anticipate reopening the traffic lanes and sidewalk outside of working hours.

We apologize for any inconvenience this might cause but thank you for your patience.

The Town of South Bruce Peninsula was pleased to take part in a cheque presentation recognizing the legacy of William Wilfred Campbell, a Person of National Historic Significance and one of Canada’s renowned poets.

Known as the “Poet Laureate of the Lakes,” Campbell had deep connections to Wiarton and drew inspiration from the natural beauty of the Peninsula.

His legacy continues to be celebrated in our community through local landmarks, including a plaque in Council Chambers, a plaque at Peninsula Shores District School, and the William Wilfred Campbell cairn in Bluewater Park.

We are proud to help preserve and celebrate the story of a remarkable Canadian with roots right here in Wiarton. Funds raised will be used towards the restoration of the cairn in Bluewater Park.

In the photo left to right is Councillor Kathy Durst, Mayor Jay Kirkland, Evelyn Newbould (William Campbell's Great Niece) and Deputy Mayor Hull.

We’ve been sharing regular updates as construction progresses on South Bruce Peninsula’s new Town Hall. Today, Mayor Jay Kirkland takes us back to the beginning to explain how we got here.

In this update, Mayor Kirkland shares why the Town needs a new municipal facility, the challenges with the existing Town Hall, and why Council ultimately selected the former grocery store property in Wiarton as the location for this important community investment.

🎥 Watch the video to learn more about the decisions and planning that have shaped the new Town Hall project.
