In recognition of the upcoming National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30, every week this month we are highlighting books in the EMR Library collection that support remembrance, reflection and practical steps to advance reconciliation.

This week we would like to recommend "On settler colonialism in Canada: lands & peoples" edited by David MacDonald and Emily Grafton. It is a collection of essays that examines the historical and ongoing impacts of settler colonialism in Canada. Drawing on perspectives from Indigenous, Black, mixed-race and other racialized, q***r and white European-descended scholars, the contributors explore themes of identity, land, power and the legacy of empire. Thought-provoking and interdisciplinary, the book encourages readers to engage with complex questions about Canada's past and present, reconciliation and the relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. For more information or to borrow this book, contact the EMR Library. Email [email protected] or call 867-667-3111.

"Leave the lights on: how joyful decisions can save our species" by Elizabeth Dunn and Jiaying Zhao offers a hopeful and practical approach to climate action. Rather than focusing on sacrifice and guilt, the authors show how enjoyable, everyday choices related to food, travel, housing and shopping can help reduce environmental impact while improving quality of life. Drawing on research in psychology and climate science, they explain how small, sustainable changes and open conversations about climate issues can contribute to broader social change. Accessible and optimistic, this book encourages readers to take meaningful climate action in ways they can maintain and enjoy. For more information or to borrow this book, contact the EMR Library.
