Wildland Fire Management plans to conduct pile burning near the Wolf Creek Bridge and Copper Haul Road over the next few days – safe conditions permitting – as part of our ongoing wildfire prevention efforts.

This location is west of the Mary Lake Subdivision and southwest of the Whitehorse Cadet Camp. Those in the area may see smoke and are advised to drive carefully.

Whitehorse Fire Department firefighters train relentlessly.
Today crews are drilling on rapid fire attack and search techniques. Our live fire training structure allows Whitehorse firefighters to practice their skills with real flames, heat, and smoke under the watchful eye of our Chief Training Officer.
Our crews work hard to hone their skills so that they can perform expertly when the need arises.

Did you know the Whitehorse Fire Department is the oldest department in the City of Whitehorse, with roots dating back to 1901?
Formed during a period of rapid growth in the community, the department began as an all-volunteer organization made up of local residents from all walks of life. One notable volunteer firefighter was none other than famed Yukon poet Robert Service, who served with the department for a short time.
In those early years, firefighters relied on steam-powered pumps and hand-drawn hose reels to protect the growing town. The department also faced one of Whitehorse's greatest challenges when the devastating 1905 fire swept through much of the community.
Today, more than a century later, Whitehorse Fire Department members continue that proud tradition of service, responding to emergencies, promoting fire safety, conducting rescues, and protecting our community 24 hours a day. Learn more about the WHFD at whitehore.ca/fire

Last evening crews from the Mount Lorne Volunteer Fire Department attended the WHFD training grounds to gain more experience with “water mapping.” Using a transparent mock structure, firefighters can see first hand how different hose streams and nozzle settings can influence effectiveness during a structural fire attack.

The WHFD values these opportunities to train with our neighbours so that when needed, we can all work together as efficiently as possible.

via Yukon Protective Services — Wildland Fire crews will burn piles of forest debris this week in the Whitehorse South Fuel Break. The burning will take place near where the Copper Haul Road crosses Wolf Creek.

Light smoke might be visible in the area while crews are burning. This work only takes place under safe weather conditions to minimize public impacts while we build the fuel break.

Crews will be back at work on the Mount Sima Road tomorrow, June 26th; please drive carefully if you are using the road. Some smoke may be visible.

Whitehorse Fire has taken delivery of its first Wildland/Urban Fire Interface Structure Protection Unit. This trailer is loaded with enough hose and pumps to provide protection for up to 15 homes when threatened by a wildland/urban interface fire. The trailer will be in-serviced later this week, just in time for the 2026 wildland fire season.
