Mobility and Falls Prevention
Our theme for September is: Falls Prevention and Mobility. Falls Prevention Awareness Week, September 18-22, 2023, is an opportunity to raise awareness about how to prevent falls among older adults.

Falls are a serious health issue but are often preventable. Falls are a main reason why older adults lose their independence. Although the risk factors increase with age, falls are not an inevitable part of aging.

Falls can lead to broken bones and can often be the start of more serious health problems and can lead to long-term disability.

There are many ways you can work to prevent falls, including:
Stay physically active.
Try balance and strength training exercises. Yoga, Pilates, and tai chi can all improve balance and muscle strength.
Fall-proof your home.
Find out about the side effects of any medicines you take.
Get enough sleep.
Avoid or limit alcohol.
Stand up slowly.
Use an assistive device if you need help feeling steady.
Take extra caution when on wet or icy surfaces.
Keep your hands free.
Choose sturdy footwear.
