DRPS Launches Annual "In the Zone" Traffic Safety Blitz for Back-to-School _______________________________________________________________________
As students return to classrooms across Durham Region, the Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) is reminding motorists to slow down, stay alert, and help keep school communities safe.
Beginning Tuesday, September 8, 2026, DRPS officers from Traffic Services and all divisions will take part in the annual "In the Zone" traffic safety blitz. The campaign will focus on school zones and community safety zones throughout Durham Region during the first weeks of the school year.
Through increased police presence and proactive enforcement, officers will target dangerous driving behaviours that put students, crossing guards, cyclists, and pedestrians at risk. Enforcement efforts will focus on speeding, distracted driving, failing to stop for school buses, stunt driving, and other high-risk traffic offences.
Last year's campaign resulted in more than 1,100 traffic tickets being issued, including:
• 527 speeding tickets
• 16 distracted driving (cell phone) violations
• Five stunt driving charges
• 17 careless driving charges
The "In the Zone" campaign aims to improve safety around schools by encouraging drivers to obey posted speed limits, eliminate distractions, and exercise extra caution during peak school travel times.
With thousands of students walking, biking, and being dropped off at schools each day, motorists are reminded that even a small reduction in speed can significantly improve safety and reduce the risk of serious injury in the event of a collision.
DRPS thanks school boards, crossing guards, school staff, parents, and community members for their continued support in helping keep Durham Region's roads safe.

On the first official day of school, Tuesday, September 8, 2026, DRPS will be taking the public behind the scenes of the campaign through a live social media ride-along with Traffic Services officers beginning at 8 a.m. Residents and media are encouraged to follow DRPS on social media throughout the day for real-time updates, enforcement highlights, and important back-to-school safety reminders.

Male Arrested After Romance Fraud Investigation

A male is facing several charges after entering into multiple romantic relationships and defrauding five victims out of more than $1 million.

In November 2025, investigators with the DRPS Financial Crimes Unit began an investigation into a male reported to have financially exploited multiple women while engaged in romantic relationships with them.

The investigation revealed that between 2020 and 2025, the accused targeted women seeking companionship and meaningful relationships. Victims first met the accused in both social and professional settings, including through the accused’s dog training business Friendly K9 and at local fitness facilities.

The accused gained the trust of victims by establishing emotional connections, proposing long-term romantic commitments, and making false representations about his financial circumstances and business ventures. He then convinced victims to provide substantial sums of money under the guise of investments, loans, business opportunities, and personal financial emergencies.

Five victims suffered financial losses exceeding $1 million. The accused maintained multiple romantic relationships simultaneously and, in some instances, used money obtained from one victim to make payments to another in order to perpetuate the deception.

Due to the complexity of the financial transactions involved, investigators conducted extensive forensic analysis and reviewed thousands of banking and financial records. As a result of the investigation, investigators formed reasonable grounds to believe multiple fraud-related offences had occurred.

On Monday, August 31, 2026, investigators with the Financial Crimes Unit located the suspect in Ajax and took him into custody without incident. At the time of his arrest, the accused was violating two court-imposed release orders.

Salvatore MALANDRINO, age 41 from Marmora is charged with: Fraud Over $5000 x5, Laundering Proceeds of Crime, Possession of Proceeds Obtained by Crime, Fail to Comply with Release Orderx2, and Uttering Forged Document.

He was held for a bail hearing.

Many victims of romance fraud are reluctant to report what has happened to them. Feelings of embarrassment, shame, self-blame, and betrayal are common. Victims of fraud are not responsible for the actions of those who deceive them. The responsibility lies solely with the person who chose to exploit trust for personal gain.

Collision Involving Electric Scooter in Pickering

A 16-year-old male suffered life-altering injuries after his e-scooter collided with a vehicle in Pickering.

On Tuesday, September 1, 2026, at approximately 7:00 p.m., officers from West Division responded to a collision between a motor vehicle and an electric scooter at Whites Road and Finch Avenue.

A grey Toyota Sienna mini-van was travelling northbound on Whites Road, making a right turn when it collided with an electric scooter in the crosswalk. Officers arrived on scene and located the 16-year-old electric scooter rider with life-altering injuries. He was transported to a Toronto area trauma centre and his condition remains stable.

The driver of the mini-van remained on scene and is cooperating with police.

Members of the DRPS Collision Investigation Unit attended the scene to conduct an investigation. The roads in the area were closed for several hours while evidence was collected. The cause of the collision is still under investigation.

A male is facing charges following a sexual assault investigation involving two children in Pickering and Toronto.

In July 2026, investigators with the Special Victims Unit began an investigation into a male after it was reported that the suspect sexually assaulted two female children. The suspect, who is known to both victims’ families, attended their respective residences and inappropriately touched the victims.

Through an extensive investigation, it was determined that the suspect had sexually assaulted the victims on numerous occasions between November 2025 and July 2026.

In August 2026, the suspect was located in Ajax and taken into custody without incident.

The accused provides art lessons from a residence in Pickering, and police have concerns there may be further victims.

A 63-year-old male from Pickering is charged with: Sexual Assault x11, and Sexual Interference with person Under 16 x11.

He was held for a bail hearing.
