Abilities Centre is a vibrant, inclusive community hub where people of all ages and abilities come together to connect, learn, and grow. From sports, fitness, and arts to education, research, and life skills programs, everything we do is about creating opportunities in a welcoming, energetic space. Our story began in August 2000, when Christine Elliott and the late Honourable Jim Flaherty imagined

a place that would break down barriers and open doors for the over 15% of Canadians living with a disability. They dreamed of a state-of-the-art facility where inclusion was the standard and where people could thrive together. With the support of dedicated volunteers, all levels of government, private donors, and our community, that dream became reality. Ground broke in May 2010, and by June 2012 we opened the doors to our 125,000 sq. Fast forward to today, and our facility has been recognized as one of the most accessible buildings in the world! Abilities Centre is a not-for-profit and registered charity, proudly recognized with the 2016 Ontario David C. Onley Award for Leadership in Accessibility. Our work is fuelled by the belief that when everyone can participate, our whole community benefits - and that’s the future we’re building, every day.

Our final story for National Accessibility Week is now airing on CP24 Toronto's Breaking News, and we ended the series by asking one simple question.

What does accessibility mean to you?

We invited members of our community to finish the sentence "Accessibility is...", and the responses were honest, powerful, and beautifully varied.

Accessibility is belonging. Accessibility is opportunity. Accessibility is being seen, heard, and welcomed exactly as you are.

Every answer was a reminder that accessibility means something different to each of us, and that's exactly why it matters. As our National Accessibility Week comes to a close, we want to keep the conversation going. We'd love to hear from you.

Finish the sentence in the comments: Accessibility is...

Your voice is part of the bigger picture, and the more we share, the more we learn from one another.

You can watch the full series on CP24 or on our social channels. Thank you for being part of this week with us.

Our fourth story for National Accessibility Week is now airing on CP24 Toronto's Breaking News, and this one shines a light on accessible employment.

This video looks at what it really means to build workplaces where people of all abilities can thrive. Accessible employment is about more than getting through the door. It's about meaningful work, equitable opportunities, and creating environments where employees feel supported, valued, and set up to succeed.

When workplaces are designed with accessibility in mind, everyone benefits. Teams become stronger, more creative, and more reflective of the communities they serve. And for the individuals who too often face barriers to employment, it opens the door to careers, confidence, and independence.

You can catch this story on CP24 or on our social channels. We have one more story still to come before the week wraps up.
