School starts tomorrow. Please drive with care.

This weekend, my volunteers and I went door to door on streets leading toward four Ward 4 elementary schools. With residents who wanted to take part, we placed Drive With Care and Drive Safely lawn signs as a simple reminder.

As kids head back to school, please slow down, put your phone away, watch for children crossing, and be ready to stop for school buses.

A few extra seconds of patience can make a real difference.

Speeding on side streets is one of the concerns Ward 4 residents raise often at the door.

Parents worry about kids walking and biking. Seniors worry about crossing the road. And many residents are frustrated by drivers speeding through quiet neighbourhood streets late at night.

We need practical solutions that fit each street - from better signs and traffic calming to flexible posts, speed-feedback signs, and carefully tested newer ideas.

If elected, I’ll push for real traffic data, clear public updates, affordable pilot projects, and targeted work with Durham Regional Police to make Ward 4 neighbourhoods safer.

Going door to door, several Ward 4 residents have asked me if the shelter at 1635 Dundas Street East went $5 million over budget. They’ve also raised concerns about safety and neighbourhood conditions. Both are fair questions, and they deserve clear, fact-based answers.

The public record shows something more complicated. There’s a $5.7 million difference between the property’s 2022 sale price and what Durham Region later paid to buy it. That’s an important question about tax dollars, but it isn’t the same as a proven construction overrun.

I’ve put together the full story in plain English: what Regional Council approved, what the shelter provides, the estimated Phase 1 work, and what residents still deserve clear answers about.

I believe we can care about people experiencing homelessness while also asking government to be open about major spending. We need both.

Good local jobs matter more than job numbers.

A job should help a person support themselves and their family. It should offer fair pay, safe working conditions, and a real chance to build a future.

Whitby can support responsible employers, protect land for business and industry, make Town processes easier to understand, and value worker safety, training, and quality work when the Town awards contracts.

More good local jobs can also strengthen Whitby's business tax base and take some pressure off homeowners.

Better communication from Town Hall means making Council decisions easier to understand.

At the August 10 Special Council meeting, Whitby Council upheld a complaint about Educational Development Charges at 409 Centre Street South. The decision means $97,090 plus interest is to be refunded.

This wasn’t a decision about the Town’s regular property-taxes. It was a decision about whether those development charges were applied correctly.

A two-year freeze on the Town’s portion of property taxes should raise an important question: how do we do it without cutting the services residents rely on?
After almost a 20% increase in Town taxes over the past four annual budgets - almost double the cost of living - residents deserve relief. But not through hidden service cuts, deferred infrastructure, or a bigger tax bill later.
This is the plan I’ll put forward: a public review of spending, recurring efficiencies, growth paying for growth, and clear, honest trade-offs that protect core services.
The Town’s 2025 Financial Statements haven’t been released yet. Once they’re released, I’ll post a more detailed, number-by-number proposal based on the latest actual results.

Did Durham Region really spend $1 million on a revolving door?

That claim has caused a lot of anger and confusion, and I understand why. A million dollars for a door sounds outrageous.

I reviewed the public records to look at what was actually included, how the project was funded, how the contractor was chosen, and what questions still haven’t been answered.

Accountability and clear communication are two of a councillor’s most important duties. My goal isn’t to defend Durham Region or attack anyone raising concerns. It’s to give residents the full picture, share my honest view, and help you make an informed decision for yourself.
