DRPS just wrapped up its annual "In the Zone" traffic safety campaign. 1,447 charges were laid and the focus of the enforcement efforts was in school and community safety zones!

590 speeding charges
207 stop sign violations
39 distracted driving charges (that's an $$$ one)
29 red and amber light offenses
5 suspended driving charges
4 seat belt offenses
3 failing to yield to pedestrians
1stunt driving charge
7 pedestrian related offenses for failing to use a crosswalk or obey pedestrian signals and
406 other Highway Traffic Act and administrative offenses.

Community safety zones and school zones are designed to protect the most vulnerable members of our community. This behaviour can have horrific consequences in all areas but most especially on these ones. We have to be better.

Something pretty special is happening at the Whitby Public Library tomorrow!

CBC Kids Reads LIVE is taking over the Central Library from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with stories, crafts, interactive activities, some familiar CBC Kids faces.

It’s free, it’s right here in Whitby, and it’s a great way to spend part of a Saturday celebrating books, reading and our Library.

A heads-up that it’s expected to be busy and parking around the Central Library will be limited.

Traffic calming is one of the things residents across Whitby raise often. There are far more requests than can reasonably be addressed all at once.

So the question becomes: how do we decide where to start?

The creation of a consistent, Town-wide traffic calming process gives the Town a way to more reasonably address all requests. Under the new approach, requests will be consistent using established criteria and actual traffic and road data, then prioritized based on need. It means the Town can compare concerns across neighbourhoods and make decisions based on evidence rather than simply responding to whichever request comes before Council first.

No process will eliminate speeding or poor driving behaviour. But when we have limited resources and many neighbourhoods asking for help, we need a fair and transparent way to determine where traffic calming measures will have the greatest impact.

Residents asked us to do more about traffic calming. This gives us a better way to do it.

Coyote safety has been a big topic of conversation in Whitby and residents now have the opportunity to hear directly from experts and ask questions.

The Town will host a public coyote information session later this month, with support from experts at Coyote Watch Canada.

It was wonderful to see so many people come together to support the important work being done to address food insecurity across Durham.
A big thank you to the many Whitby businesses who donated, participated and helped make the Empty Bowls fundraiser for Feed the Need possible. Over $100, 000 dollars was raised in support of food security!

Tomorrow, tens of thousands of kids head back to school and parents everywhere are experiencing a wide range of emotions, from “I’m not ready” to “is 6:30 too early for drop-off?”

Educators and school staff are getting ready to welcome all those kids through the schools' doors.

Here’s to a new school year, to the people who make our schools work, and to everyone who remembered to clean out the lunch bags in June, (and my sympathies to those who forgot)!

Drive Safely!

Beginning Tuesday, September 8, DRPS will engage in a safety blitz. "In the Zone" will focus on school and community safety zones throughout Durham Region during the first weeks of the school year.

Officers will target dangerous driving behaviours that put students, crossing guards, cyclists, and pedestrians at risk. Enforcement efforts will focus on speeding, distracted driving, failing to stop for school buses, stunt driving, and other high-risk traffic offences.

It takes all of us to keep our streets safe. Police officers, crossing guards, school staff, parents, and community members all have a role to play.

DRPS will be taking the public behind the scenes of the campaign through a live social media ride-along with Traffic Services officers beginning at 8 AM.
