Today, members of the Alma Fire Department had the pleasure of visiting the students and staff at Lighthouse Church School in Loch Broom.

During our visit, firefighters gave a brief presentation on the protective gear and equipment we wear during emergency calls, helping students understand how firefighters look and why our gear is so important. We also shared some general fire safety tips, including what to do if a smoke alarm sounds and the importance of having an escape plan at home.

Thank you to Lighthouse Church School for inviting us and for giving us the opportunity to spend time with the students. We always enjoy connecting with our community and helping educate young people about fire safety!

Yesterday evening, members spent some time sharpening their skills during recent brush fire training. These scenarios help prepare our firefighters for the unique challenges that come with wildland and grass fires, while reinforcing teamwork, safety, and effective fireground operations.

Today, on First Responders Day, we take a moment to recognize and thank the dedicated individuals who step up when their communities need them most.

Here at Alma Fire Department, we are incredibly proud of our volunteer members. These men and women answer the call at all hours—leaving their families, jobs, and daily lives behind—to protect and serve others. Their commitment, courage, and selflessness are what keep our community safe.

But today isn’t just about us. It’s about every fire department, every paramedic, every police officer, dispatchers, and all emergency personnel who work together as one team. Whether it’s on the fireground, roadside, or in a medical emergency, it takes a coordinated effort from all first responders to make a difference.

We are grateful to stand alongside such dedicated professionals and volunteers across the region. Your hard work does not go unnoticed.

To all first responders—thank you for your service, your sacrifice, and your unwavering commitment to the communities you serve.

Stay safe.

🔥 Wildfire Season Begins Today – March 15, 2026 🔥

Today marks the start of wildfire risk season in Nova Scotia.

From March 15 to October 15, provincial burn restrictions are in effect to help prevent wildfires across the province.

During this time:

• Burning is not allowed between 8:00 AM and 2:00 PM anywhere in Nova Scotia
• After 2:00 PM each day, the provincial BurnSafe map is updated to show whether burning is permitted in your area
• Always check restrictions before lighting any outdoor fire

The BurnSafe map uses a color system to show daily restrictions:
🟢 Green – Burning allowed after 2 PM
🟡 Yellow – Burning allowed after 7 PM
🔴 Red – No burning permitted

⚠️ Fines for burning when it is not permitted can be up to $25,000.

Wildfires are often caused by unattended or improperly controlled outdoor fires. Please burn responsibly and follow provincial regulations.

Check daily burn restrictions before lighting any fire:

The Province is restricting travel and activities in the woods because continued hot, dry conditions have greatly increased the risk of wildfires.

The restrictions, effective as of 4 p.m. today, August 5, include:

- hiking, camping, fishing and the use of vehicles in the woods are not permitted
- trail systems through woods are off limits
- camping is allowed only in campgrounds.

These and other measures are in place on provincial Crown and private land until October 15 or until conditions allow them to be lifted. The fine for violating the restrictions is $25,000.

“Conditions continue to be extremely dry. Until we get a significant amount of rain, we’re at an elevated risk of wildfires,” said Premier Tim Houston. “Most wildfires are caused by human activity, so to reduce the risk, we’re keeping people out of the woods until conditions improve. I’m asking everyone to do the right thing – don’t light that campfire, stay out of the woods and protect our people and communities.”

Forestry, mining and any commercial activity on provincial Crown lands are also restricted. People who conduct this kind of activity can apply for a permit at their local Department of Natural Resources office.

While the restrictions are in place, people can still access beaches and parks, but not the trail systems. Private landowners are free to use their own properties but cannot host others to use wooded areas of their properties.
