Our Association has been working with "The Kings Road and Community Emergency Response Plan" group over the past year as they developed plans to respond in the event a wildfire threatens the community. Kings Road and the surrounding lanes and roads are in the heart of our response district and this group of highly motivated community volunteers have implemented many proactive measures that will assist residents and first responders in the event of a large-scale wildfire:

- Establishing email lists, maps and social media accounts to share information and communicate about relevant programs including FireSmart, hfxALERT, and the Vulnerable Person’s Registry

- Working with local government and organizations- including us- to gather useful information and advocate for initiatives or grants that will reduce the risk of wildfire in the area, support mitigation efforts and assist in the event of an evacuation

- Establishing pre-determined emergency “Muster Points” where residents can meet in the event they’re unable to evacuate by Kings Road

- Working with our membership to do pre-plans for many of the properties that consider fire apparatus access, water fill site locations and shore access to Grand Lake

The passion and effort that this group of community members has put into wildfire preparedness is impressive and an inspiring example of a community taking action to promote its resilience to wildfire. Our Association was proud to support their cause with funding the development and installation of new signage throughout the area that clearly identifies properties that have agreed to be “Muster Points” or “Fire Department Fill Sites”.

While we hope this investment will never need to be relied upon, any onset wildfire event produces a chaotic environment for area residents and the many agencies that will respond to the emergency. Having enhanced signage to assist those evacuating or first responders unfamiliar with the area will help reduce confusion and save critical time on a day we all hope never comes.

Our members from Station 42 and 43 along with Station 45 attended a small brush fire this evening just across the street from Station 42.

The fire is now out.

We were not able to determine exactly what caused this fire but ask that folks be extra careful with all of their activities around wooded areas because this is a particularly risky time of the year for wildfires.

If you see an unattended fire, call 911 and report it.

It was time. Anyone who has been in the Wellington fire station will remember the “Blue Wooden Lockers” that were installed back in…well, no one really remembers. In 2023 we were able to use provincial grant money to purchase new “Ready Rack” lockers for Station 43 in Grand Lake and our members were extremely happy with them.

We’re now happy to report that we’ve installed the same style lockers at Station 42 in Wellington so that all our members now have a modern locker to store their gear. These new lockers are significantly easier to clean, allow gear to dry faster and make station space organization more efficient which helps when responding to emergency calls.

This much needed upgrade would not have been possible without your continued support through the weekly Nova Scotia Firefighters 50-50 draw and we are super grateful to each of you who purchase tickets every week.

Our members are out-and-about a lot within our community and beyond so we felt it was important for each one to have a robust First Aid kit for their personal vehicle. Anyone who has come across an accident or other unexpected incident with injuries knows how long it feels like when waiting for emergency services to arrive- especially if you don’t have tools or items to be able to help.

Having these new kits will allow our members- who are all trained as Advanced Medical First Responders- to assist with providing immediate First Aid at any incident they may come across in their travels…after, of course, ensuring 911 has been called and that emergency services are on the way.

This purchase was possible due to your continued support through the weekly Nova Scotia Firefighters 50-50 draw. We appreciate your continued support as we invest in initiatives like this that help our members help our community.

Be sure to get your tickets by 9PM tonight!!

We love seeing our community do well. Marc and Trevor were happy to present Wellington’s own Inner Strength Taekwondo Academy with $1000 to help them compete at the Canadian Nationals in Halifax, the Canada Open in Calgary and the US Open in Las Vegas.

We’re told they managed to secure a collective 4 Gold, 4 Silver and 5 Bronze Medals in the events!

Congrats to the incredible group athletes…we’re proud of you all!

Training isn’t just for Tuesdays!

This weekend our area hosted an Ice Rescue Technician course put on by local instructors Lt. Richard and Lt. Aaron. We’re happy to report that 5 personnel completed the course and will now be able to respond to ice related emergencies in the Fall River, Wellington, Grand Lake and Dutch Settlement areas.

Volunteer Firefighters respond to much more than just fires in our communities- if this type of training sounds interesting to you, we should talk.

Wellington and Grand Lake are actively recruiting members and we’ll have an Officer on duty at Station 42 (4132 HIGHWAY 2) next Tuesday (February 17th) between 6PM-7PM to answer any questions you might have about being a Volunteer Firefighter.

Stop by and say hi!
