Our Association has been working with "The Kings Road and Community Emergency Response Plan" group over the past year as they developed plans to respond in the event a wildfire threatens the community. Kings Road and the surrounding lanes and roads are in the heart of our response district and this group of highly motivated community volunteers have implemented many proactive measures that will assist residents and first responders in the event of a large-scale wildfire:
- Establishing email lists, maps and social media accounts to share information and communicate about relevant programs including FireSmart, hfxALERT, and the Vulnerable Person’s Registry
- Working with local government and organizations- including us- to gather useful information and advocate for initiatives or grants that will reduce the risk of wildfire in the area, support mitigation efforts and assist in the event of an evacuation
- Establishing pre-determined emergency “Muster Points” where residents can meet in the event they’re unable to evacuate by Kings Road
- Working with our membership to do pre-plans for many of the properties that consider fire apparatus access, water fill site locations and shore access to Grand Lake
The passion and effort that this group of community members has put into wildfire preparedness is impressive and an inspiring example of a community taking action to promote its resilience to wildfire. Our Association was proud to support their cause with funding the development and installation of new signage throughout the area that clearly identifies properties that have agreed to be “Muster Points” or “Fire Department Fill Sites”.
While we hope this investment will never need to be relied upon, any onset wildfire event produces a chaotic environment for area residents and the many agencies that will respond to the emergency. Having enhanced signage to assist those evacuating or first responders unfamiliar with the area will help reduce confusion and save critical time on a day we all hope never comes.
