Strive Niagara

Strive Niagara Through education and support, Strive Niagara empowers young families. There is a teacher and other students always willing to help with your courses.

Strive Niagara, formerly Adolescent’s Family Support Services of Niagara (AFSSN), is a non-profit, social service organization dedicated to assisting the needy by fostering the independence of young families pursuing an education through the provision of quality child care. Strive is geared towards supporting young mothers and their families as they work toward graduating from high school. We work

on our courses at our own pace as well as in a group on a course we want or need towards attaining our secondary school diplomas. Each centre has a wonderful asset...a Community Worker, she is there to support you five days a week...no matter what the situation. She will facilitate programs and workshops in parenting, life skills, employment and post secondary preparation and a wide variety of programs that help us to reach our future goals. The daycare that is provided for our children is second to none. The staff is supportive and always there with a helping hand for you and your child. The atmosphere throughout the building is one of the greatest parts of this program. You'll never have to worry about being judged or looked down upon when you are in the centre. The supports we acquire while at school help us gain confidence in ourselves and our skills as mothers. They also give us the tools needed to get a good job. We also acquire a "family support" network that many of us would never have known if we hadn't of come.

Shhh… it’s a STUFFY SLEEPOVER!

Our preschool educators hosted a very special sleepover at the Sven H Dohnberg Centre —and the guests were all of our kiddos’ favourite stuffies!

The stuffies checked in for the night, found their cozy spots around the centre, and had a BIG night of fun!

We’re pretty sure they’re going to need a vacation after this sleepover!

Today our hearts were full as our little learners from our Sven H Dohnberg Child Care Centre shared smiles, handmade cards, and beautiful artwork with the wonderful residents at Heidehof, our local nursing home. ❤️

Watching generations connect through kindness, laughter, and creativity was a beautiful reminder that even the smallest gestures can make the biggest difference. Our children were so proud to brighten someone's day, and the seniors welcomed them with warm smiles and grateful hearts.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this special visit possible. These moments of connection create memories that will be treasured by both young and old.

Strive recently gathered for our Annual General Meeting, an evening filled with reflection, celebration, and excitement for the future.

One of the highlights of the evening was recognizing our outgoing Board President Zach Dadson for his outstanding leadership and dedication. As a token of our appreciation, he was presented with a commemorative jacket in recognition of his 12 years of service and the lasting impact he has made on our organization. We are deeply grateful for his commitment and wish him all the best in the years ahead.

We were also honoured to hear from one of our incredible young parents and past participant of our Young Parents Outreach program, who shared her inspiring journey with our Board, staff, and guests. She spoke about her path from becoming a young mom to earning her high school diploma and pursuing her passion through the Culinary program at Niagara College. Her dream is to one day own her own restaurant, and her story was a powerful reminder that with determination, support, and perseverance, goals can become reality. Her heartfelt words left everyone in the room inspired and hopeful for what lies ahead.

The evening also marked an exciting new chapter as we welcomed and elected our new Board of Directors. We look forward to working together as we continue to strengthen our mission, support young families, and create new opportunities for the year ahead.

Thank you to everyone who attended, supported, and helped make our AGM such a meaningful evening. Together, we look forward to another year of empowering young parents and building brighter futures for families in our community.

What an unforgettable day it was as we celebrated the graduation of our incredible young moms recently!

This milestone represented so much more than earning a high school diploma—it reflected resilience, determination, and the strength it took to balance motherhood, school, and life's many challenges.

Our graduates overcame obstacles, completed late-night assignments, and remained committed to their goals. Along the way, they showed their children what perseverance looked like and proved that dreams could be achieved through hard work and dedication.

The celebration included some truly special moments. One of our graduates, Teagan, was presented with the Margaret Jarrell Award, which honours the legacy of Strive's founder and recognizes exceptional perseverance, determination, and commitment in the face of adversity. It was especially meaningful to have our former Executive Director join us to personally present the award alongside our current Executive Director Michelina Horton, making the moment even more memorable.

We also had the honour of celebrating Aspen, one of our young moms as the class valedictorian, where she courageously shared her inspiring story with grads and attendees. Her words reflected the challenges she had overcome and the hope she carried for the future, leaving a lasting impression on everyone in the room.

We were incredibly proud to celebrate each and every one of these remarkable women. Their diplomas represented more than an academic achievement—they symbolized courage, resilience, and the promise of brighter futures for themselves and their children.

Congratulations to our graduates! It was an honour to be part of your journey, and we can't wait to see all that you accomplish next. Your achievements inspired us all, and we celebrated this well-deserved milestone with immense pride.
