The University of Waterloo acknowledges that much of our work takes place on the traditional territory of the Neutral, Anishinaabeg and Haudenosaunee peoples.

Our main campus is situated on the Haldimand Tract, the land granted to the Six Nations that includes six miles on each side of the Grand River. Our active work toward reconciliation takes place across our campuses through research, learning, teaching and community building and is co-ordinated within our Indigenous Initiatives Office.

Campus may have been young in 1970, but sustainability was already in style!

A rustic cedar rail fence was built outside Dana Porter Library, then called the Arts Library, from salvaged farm fences found around campus.

While the fence is no longer there, photos like this preserve a small piece of Waterloo's early history.

Congratulations to the 2026 Sharon Lamont Student Award winners, Sarah and Lakshmi!⁣

Both Sarah and Lakshmi previously worked at the Libraries and enjoyed connecting peers to library resources, learning transferable skills they can take with them into the future.⁣

For bead artist and University of Waterloo student Shay Herold art is a conversation starter, a way to reflect and learn about topics that may be difficult.

On Monday, June 22, Shay's latest art piece was installed at the Dana Porter Library: a red dress made of 4,000 beads symbolizing the estimated number of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and two-spirit people in Canada.
