🚨 WATER SAFETY & FIRE DEPARTMENT TRAINING ON OUR WATERWAYS 🚨

This summer, residents and visitors may see a pair of Wasaga Beach Fire Department Personal Watercraft (PWC’s) operating on the Nottawasaga River or shoreline of Georgian Bay.

While our department does occasionally respond to water-related emergencies, it is equally important that our team regularly trains so we are prepared when needed. These PWC’s allow firefighters to respond quickly and safely, while also accessing shallow water areas that may be difficult or impossible for larger rescue boats to reach.

Our units are equipped with:
✅ Emergency lighting
✅ Communications
✅ Rescue and safety equipment
✅ Specialized flotation and rescue gear

As we enjoy another busy summer season on and around the water, we also encourage everyone to keep water safety top of mind:

🌊 Never swim alone
🌊 Always supervise children near water
🌊 Never swim while impaired by alcohol or drugs
🌊 Wear a properly fitted lifejacket or PFD when boating or using watercraft
🌊 Check weather and water conditions before heading out
🌊 Be aware of offshore breezes and changing winds, which can quickly carry inflatables and water toys out into Georgian Bay
🌊 Avoid diving into unfamiliar or shallow water
🌊 Keep a charged phone or communication device nearby when boating

We hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable summer on the water.

Stay safe, stay aware, and know that your Wasaga Beach Fire Department continues to train and prepare to serve our community.

BREAKING NEWS: Wasaga Beach Expands Free Resident Parking to Beach Areas 1 and 2 for First Time - Council expands resident-first parking program ahead of another busy summer season

Just in time for summer, Wasaga Beach residents will have more free places to park near the beachfront than ever before.

Following direction from Council, Beach Areas 1 and 2 will operate as municipal parking lots for the first time, joining New Wasaga and Allenwood Beach as waterfront locations where residents with a valid digital Resident Parking Permit can park free of charge throughout the summer season.

The expansion comes as Wasaga Beach prepares for another exciting summer season featuring more than 80 live music performances, the new Wasaga BeachLife Festival and Midway, expanded waterfront celebrations, and signature events along the world’s longest freshwater beach

“Summer in Wasaga Beach is about making memories at the waterfront, and we want residents to be able to enjoy the beach as easily as possible,” said Mayor Brian Smith. “Council introduced free resident parking in 2023 to make it easier and more affordable for residents to enjoy the waterfront, and now we’re expanding that benefit to Beach Areas 1 and 2 for the very first time. At a time when costs are high, this is one small way we can help residents save money, stay close to home, and enjoy more of what makes summer in Wasaga Beach special — from the waterfront and live music to family events and evenings by the beach.”

The expansion reflects Council’s continued commitment to improving resident access to the waterfront while supporting a vibrant summer tourism season.

Did you know? The Town of Wasaga Beach—in partnership with Ontario Parks—is a steward and guardian of the longest freshwater beach in the world. Wasaga Beach offers 14 kilometres of accessible beachfront, which is organized into 8 different beach areas.

✅ Different beach areas are cared for differently.

✅ NO-GO: At Beach Area 1, there is a “no-go” zone where the mouth of Nottawasaga River meets Georgian Bay. People are not permitted to enter this small but significant area, which has been federally designated as an Area of Natural and Scientific Interest (ANSI).

✅ NO-RAKE: At Beach Area 1, the Town also respects a “no-rake” zone from the ANSI to the municipal Spruce Street parking lot. Although mechanical grooming doesn’t happen in this area, it is open for residents and visitors to enjoy 🏖️ However, we do ask that all beachgoers obey the rules and posted signs, and stay out of any fenced areas that may pop-up throughout the season. That’s because this area has been federally designated as critical habitat for the endangered . Each year, a small number of these endangered birds visit Wasaga Beach to nest, and the Town is committed to doing its part to help protect them. ✅ GROOMED: In front of Beach Drive—and west throughout Beach Area 2 and beyond—the Town and Wasaga Beach Provincial Park use mechanical grooming equipment to remove garbage, glass and debris to keep the beach clean, accessible and safe for the public.

BREAKING NEWS - Piping Plovers Get Added Protection at Wasaga Beach: New seasonal technicians and community volunteers will support nest monitoring, beach surveys, public education, and long-term shoreline stewardship

“As responsibility for Beach Areas 1 and 2 transitions from the Province to the Town, our focus is on making sure the care of our beachfront remains thoughtful, informed, and grounded in best practices,” said Mayor Brian Smith. “This work is about protecting what makes Wasaga Beach special — from sensitive shoreline areas to the endangered species that depend on them.”

As Wasaga Beach prepares for another busy summer season, the Town is expanding on-the-ground protection for the endangered piping plover with the addition of two Destination Wasaga Piping Plover Technicians.

The new seasonal roles will support monitoring and recovery efforts for the endangered shorebird, including beach surveys, nest monitoring, data collection, and public education with residents and visitors.

“Aligned with past Ontario Parks practices, the Town is taking a phased and responsible approach to building its in-house stewardship capacity,” said Lee Furlotte, Director of Parks, Recreation and Facilities. “These new technician roles are an important first step, and we expect to continue strengthening this team next season as part of a long-term municipal approach to piping plover protection and beach management. We are grateful to our provincial and federal partners, who are working alongside us on the ground, sharing equipment, expertise, and best practices as we build local capacity.”
