Grandparents have always been cherished in Metis communities, including Batoche. For many people, their grandparents lived in their home and played vital roles in the community. They were the elders, the knowledge keepers, the educators, the storytellers, and so much more. Grandparents were looked to for advice and wisdom in all areas of everyday life.

It’s Official Languages Day! Here at Batoche National Historic Site you can receive service in English or french!

Our current hours of operation are Monday to Friday, 10am to 5pm until September 25!

It’s back to school season! Time to grab your books and hike 2 miles to the schoolhouse (uphill both ways of course!). Then grab your slate board and get ready for today’s lesson!

Batoche National Historic Site will be open Thursday to Monday until September 9, 2026. Starting September 10th we will be open Monday to Friday! Hours of operation are 10am to 5pm.

🦇Batoche National Historic Site is home to many animals of all sizes. One animal you may not see too often is a bat. These creatures often hide and sleep in the daytime and then soar across the skies all night long. 🌃

🦇Celebrate this International Bat Night by looking up at the dark skies. You may be lucky enough to see one of these nocturnal creatures!

Madeleline Gareau (Delorme) was born to Urbain Delorme and Marie Desmarais in 1867.

In 1884, Madeleine and Ludger Gareau were the very first couple to be married in the St. Antoine de Padoue Church at Batoche. Ludger was a contractor for many prominent buildings in Batoche, including the church itself.

This allowed the couple to build a vibrant two-storey home on a parish riverlot near the cemetery. However,t they did not stay there long as they left for a honeymoon in Quebec at the end of 1884. They were surprised and worried when they learned that the Northwest Resistance had erupted in the spring of 1885 and decided to remain in Quebec.

After the battle’s end, the couple moved back to Batoche and found their beautiful home in ruins and their community struggling. They stayed to help pick up the pieces. Ludger was hired to fix up some buildings and build coffins.

Shortly afterwards, they decided to relocate to Pincher Creek, AB.

Madeline passed in 1958.

Batoche National Historic Site welcomes everyone, and that includes our furry friends!
If you bring your dog to Batoche, please remember to always keep them on a leash, stay back from wildlife, and remain outdoors with them!

In many Metis communities like Batoche it was practice for women to “mamawapowuk” (gather) in circles to socialize and create beautiful art such as beading, embroidery, rugs, or sewn objects. This was where they told their stories both orally and through their art.
