Quadra Village Community Centre Quadra Village Community Centre is a welcoming gathering place in Victoria. We build community and personal capacity in our neighbourhood and nearby areas.

Happy pride month from QVCC!

This month, we celebrate the strength, diversity, and contributions of 2SLGBTQIA+ communities in Quadra Village and beyond.

We are committed to fostering a welcoming, inclusive environment where everyone can be their authentic selves. Pride is a time to celebrate love, identity, and belonging, while also recognizing the ongoing work toward equity and inclusion.

To our 2SLGBTQIA+ community: we see you, we value you, and we celebrate you.

Dear Quadra Village Community,

As many of you know, Sue Mactavish, whose career of service to community included extensive time as the Youth and Family Counsellor at George Jay Elementary School and the Family Programs Coordinator at Quadra Village Community Centre, went on medical leave starting in January 2026. Sue battled cancer over the last few years, finding ways to continue the work she was so passionate about. She demonstrated a warrior's spirit throughout.
Sue was remarkable in many ways including the way that she was a highly effective and appreciated support by the people she worked for and also generated grants and programs that made a difference in the community. When we surveyed the community or created written comment opportunities many folks took the time to detail the positive force that Sue was in their lives. A couple of years ago, we were nominated by a prominent community member for a large foundation grant for child, youth and family programs. We were chosen in large part due to the evidence of Sue's difference-making in her work.
Within the last couple of weeks Sue stopped treatments as they were impacting her too greatly. Unfortunately, this quickly led to her needing hospice care. Last week I received a note from her son who shared a further update:
"Just thought that I'd let you know that mum passed yesterday afternoon on hospice. She went peacefully and was surrounded by friends and family.
Please feel free to share this update with the team and community. ...... We do not currently have plans for a memorial. In lieu of flowers, mum welcomed donations to Victoria Hospice or BC Cancer in her memory.
Mum loved her work at the centre and being part of the QVCC family. She was glad to be able to continue working for as long as she did. Thank you to the whole QVCC team for your support."

We are grateful for all that Sue did for the community and know that this is hitting some within our field and in the community rather hard. Please let us know if you need additional support.
