How many ducklings can you spot with mama wood duck? ๐Ÿ‘€

The life of a wood duck starts with a bang! At just one day old, ducklings must take a leap of faith by jumping from their nest up to nine metres (30ft) high in a tree cavity down to their mother on the ground. Talk about bravery! ๐Ÿ™Œ

Wild animals and their babies face many challenges, but we don't have to be one of them. You can help by sticking to designated trails, following park rules (including keeping dogs under control!) and leaving no trace.

๐Ÿšง Temporary Trail Closures in Sea to Sea Regional Park ๐Ÿšง

The CRD, after consultation with the BC Conservation Officer Service, has temporarily closed three trails in a small area of Sea to Sea Regional Park due to bear activity. Please stay out of the closed sections of trail and keep pets on leash in the park. These closures are expected to be in place for a week, at which point the CRD and BCCOS will reassess.

The following trails are temporarily closed:
๐Ÿฅพ Sword Fern Trail
๐Ÿšตโ€โ™€๏ธ Stonecrop 2
๐Ÿšตโ€โ™€๏ธ Stonecrop 3

The CRD reminds visitors that we share our natural areas with all types of large wildlife, including carnivores and omnivores like cougars and bears. Always stay alert and use caution and watch for signs of wildlife nearby, such as tracks, claw marks on trees and s**t. Never approach or feed wildlife and always keep pets on leash to reduce the risk of encounters with large wildlife.

Additionally, the CRD reminds all park and campground visitors to always properly secure food and garbage, particularly when leaving an area unattended.

Park visitors can report wildlife-human interactions where public safety may be at risk to the BC Conservation Officer Service RAPP line at 1-877-952-7277.

Summer is almost here and the CRD's loaner lifejackets have been replaced at Thetis Lake Main Beach and Hamsterly Beach! Forgot your kiddo's lifejackets or have a friend that might benefit from wearing one? You are welcome to borrow any of these PFDs, or personal floatation devices.

They're available in a variety of sizes, including adult, for community use while at the beach. Return them to the station at the end of your visit and allow other families to benefit from the loaner program!

Life rings, also available at these two beaches, can be deployed in case of an emergency. All equipment is regularly inspected by CRD staff to ensure it is in good working order.

Looking for more information on water safety? Our friends over at the WaterWise Team have great information on how to stay safe at local swimming areas and will be popping up in CRD parks throughout the summer. ๐Ÿ–๏ธ๐ŸŠ

Taking action in your community? ๐ŸŒฑ

These CRD and HAT employees have effectively removed some invasive shiny geranium, a plant which can crowd out native plants and weaken ecosystems.

Removing invasive species can make a big impact, but itโ€™s important to do it right:
Learn proper removal techniques.
Follow best management practices.
Avoid spreading seeds or fragments.
Working together ensures efforts are safe, effective, and long-lasting.

More people and families will have access to a total of 478 affordable, family-oriented rental homes with the opening of Caledonia in Victoria, and with construction starting on two other developments in the region: Cedar Hill in Saanich and Verdier in Central Saanich. We are committed to fostering an inclusive and accessible region where everyone can participate. We continue to work toward identifying, removing, and preventing barriers across our services, programs, facilities, and public spaces so people of all abilities can access them with dignity and independence.

This National AccessAbility Week, from May 31 to June 6, letโ€™s celebrate the achievements, leadership, and contributions of people with disabilities, while recognizing the importance of continuing to build more accessible communities and workplaces for all.

Want to take action? Wear red for Red Shirt Day on Wednesday, June 3 and show your support for accessibility and inclusion. Together, we can raise awareness, challenge barriers, and celebrate the strength and diversity of our communities.

If you have experienced barriers while accessing CRD services or facilities, please share your feedback with us by visiting https://ow.ly/UXBr50Z5eQ3

Greater Victoria's drinking water begins it's journey in a protected reservoir, surrounded by healthy forests that naturally filter and safeguard our drinking water supply.
