Pushing Limits Underground

From 13–18 August, 17 Junior Canadian Rangers from the Valemount JCR Patrol took on an unforgettable challenge in Evanoff Provincial Park near Valemount, B.C.

For most, it was their first experience caving and rappelling.

The main activity began with a hike into the Fang Cave area before the JCRs rappelled into and explored the cave system. Underground, in temperatures of approximately 8°C, they crawled through narrow passages, navigated confined and uneven sections, and worked together through the cold, dark environment.

From the start of the hike to the return, the activity lasted approximately 12 hours — and all 17 JCRs completed it. 💪

Each JCR faced a different challenge. For some, it was trusting the rope and taking that first rappel. For others, it was entering the cave, moving through confined spaces, or finding the determination to keep going as the hours passed.

What stood out was how they responded: pushing beyond their individual comfort levels, trusting their equipment and instructors, and supporting one another whenever someone was struggling or unsure.

Supported by three Canadian Rangers and four adult volunteers, the exercise provided an opportunity for the JCRs to build confidence, resilience and teamwork through an experience far outside their normal training.

By the end of the day, they had accomplished something many of them had never imagined doing before.

Bravo Zulu, Valemount JCR Patrol!

Exercise NORTHERN LIGHT continues in Grande Cache, Alberta, where Participants are continuing their training and building on the knowledge gained during Basic Wilderness Survival Training (BWST).

NORFORCE members have been learning how to set traps and snares, navigate using the sun and moon, use smoke signals for emergency signalling, and construct field-expedient tools. These practical skills help develop the confidence and self-reliance required to survive and operate in remote wilderness environments.
Stay tuned for more updates as NORFORCE members continue building on their wilderness survival skills throughout Exercise NORTHERN LIGHT.

NORFORCE has arrived in Grande Cache, Alberta, where they are being hosted by 4 CRPG's Grande Cache Patrol.

Over the next five days, Grande Cache Patrol will lead and deliver Basic Wilderness Survival Training, where participants will learn the essential skills and knowledge required to survive and operate in the Canadian wilderness. On the first day of BWST, Grande Cache Patrol led participants from Grande Cache to an area near Sheep Creek, where NORFORCE members established a base camp in preparation for their wilderness training.

Participants learned how to start fires using flint and natural materials found in the surrounding forest. Fire-starting without modern tools is an essential wilderness survival skill, as flint remains a reliable method of ignition regardless of weather conditions, while matches and lighters may not always be available. Over the coming days, participants will continue building their knowledge of key survival concepts, including the psychology of survival, procuring food and water, signalling for assistance, and shelter construction.

Stay tuned for more updates as the training continues!

Friday, 28 August — Equipment & Camaraderie

Training is only one part of Exercise NORTHERN LIGHTS. Building relationships is just as important. 🇨🇦🤝🇦🇺

Following another morning of physical training, members of 4 CRPG and NORFORCE focused on field equipment before coming together for a barbecue at CFB Edmonton.

As part of the day, 4 CRPG and NORFORCE also exchanged gifts as a symbol of friendship, respect and the strong partnership shared between our two units. We are grateful for the opportunity to train alongside our Australian partners and for the continued collaboration that makes Exercise NORTHERN LIGHTS so meaningful.

These shared experiences continue to strengthen the camaraderie and mutual understanding that have been at the heart of Exercise NORTHERN LIGHTS since the reciprocal exercise began in 2011.
