Children and youth are growing up in a digital world that is changing incredibly quickly. Social media, smartphones, group chats, gaming, location sharing and AI can expose young people to situations they may not know how to handle.
We strongly encourage parents, caregivers and grandparents to attend Establishing Safe, Caring, & Respectful Digital Communities with their youth aged 10+ hosted by Safer Schools Together.
This 60-minute session is designed to help families start important conversations about making safe, respectful and informed choices online.
Families will learn about:
• Healthy digital media habits, oversharing and digital addiction
• The permanence of online posts and activity
• How a young person’s “digital tattoo” can affect how they are perceived by sports teams, colleges and future employers
• Caring for and supporting peers online and offline
• Geo-location settings and risks associated with social media and cellphone use
• Cyberbullying and its social and legal consequences
• Sexting, sextortion, and the possession or distribution of intimate images
• How and where youth can report concerns and get help
• An anonymous student reporting tool that can help keep young people safe online and offline
You don’t need to be a technology expert to help keep your child safe online. You just need to be part of the conversation.
We hope families will take advantage of this opportunity and attend together. The digital world is part of our children’s everyday lives and understanding it together is one of the most important ways we can support them.
