What do you enjoy most about working for Victoria Fire and the Fire Service?

As a fourth-generation Victorian, one of the things I enjoy most about working for Victoria Fire is the incredible sense of pride that comes with serving a community rooted in history and tradition. The camaraderie within the department is second to none, and it’s that shared commitment and teamwork that shows up every day—on calls, during inspections, and throughout the community.

I’ve always believed this job is member-driven. For newer firefighters coming into the service, my advice is simple: show up, be present, and grow with your teammates. The relationships you build here will shape your career and your life.

Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to stay actively involved within the department and the membership. Early in my career, I served as an executive member with both the Charitable and Benevolent Associations, spending many years supporting the hockey program on and off the ice. More recently, I had the honour of serving two terms as President of IAFF Local 730—a role I consider the proudest chapter of my fire service career.

Now entering the “twilight years” of my career, I’ve found a new appreciation for learning from the younger members coming into the department. Their energy, ideas, and perspectives continue to make the job rewarding.

Interests: Outside of the fire hall, I stay busy as an active softball coach, enjoy golfing, appreciate a good neighbourhood pub, and spend as much time as possible with my family. And yes… despite decades of emotional damage, I remain a loyal Canucks fan.

Victoria Fire Department’s marine program plays a critical role protecting our busy Inner Harbour, marinas, waterfront businesses, and surrounding waterways.

From vessel fires and marine rescues to major waterfront emergencies, our fire boat crews are trained to respond in some of the most complex and high-risk environments.

Maintaining these specialized skills requires ongoing off-shift training and countless hours dedicated to staying sharp on marine operations, rescue techniques, and firefighting tactics.

This commitment ensures our members are always ready when our community needs them most.

What I enjoy most about working for Victoria Fire and the Fire Service: It’s the members of Local 730 that make this job so rewarding. The positive, supportive environment they create makes coming to work something I genuinely look forward to. On top of that, no two days are ever the same—there’s always something new to learn or experience, which keeps the job fresh, engaging, and meaningful.

Interests: Playing and watching sports—especially hockey, lacrosse, and golf. I also enjoy spending time at the lake with friends and family.

In addition to his role as firefighter, Cole is an active member of the Victoria Fire Honour Guard and Peer Support Team, as well as a proud member of the Local 730 hockey team. Cole also competes with the (home opener May 22nd) and gives back to the sport by coaching minor lacrosse. And if those extra curriculars weren’t enough, Cole has also spent the past five seasons as an assistant coach with the men’s program.

Keep up the good work Cole, representing Local 730 proudly.
