Fort Rodd Hill NHS commemorates the national significance of the Victoria-Esquimalt coast artillery fortress in the defence of Victoria and the naval base at Esquimalt harbour, as part of the larger defence strategy of the British Empire and Canada, 1878 to 1956. Fisgard Lighthouse NHS commemorates the national significance of the first lighthouse on Canada's west coast. Fisgard has been an import

ant symbol of sovereignty-British, Colonial and Canadian-since 1860. Along with Race Rocks lighthouse, Fisgard provides a guide for mariners to Royal Roads anchorage, Esquimalt harbour and its naval base, and points the way to Victoria harbour.

What in the world did a "Fitter" do 🤔?
Pretty much a little of everything as far as fixing and maintaining things at Fort Rodd Hill. Artificers (often called "Tiffys" or "Fitters") could do minor repairs to the equipment needed to keep the guns working, as well as metalwork, woodwork, and even make their own paint from scratch!

The Fitter’s Shop is in the woods behind the red brick Warrant Officer’s Quarters.

Come and take a look!

? The seeds used to restore the population of Slender Popcornflower in Gulf Islands National Park Reserve were grown right in our nursery.

It took many years of care and dedication for the population to become self-sustaining.
Today, our nursery work focuses on growing species from the Douglas-fir ecosystem—such as Soapberry and Dogwood—as part of the 2 Billion Trees initiative, to help restore forests in Gulf Islands National Park Reserve.

Be sure to check out the nursery next time you visit the national historic sites!

Slender Popcornflower is blooming brighter than ever on Saturna Island. 🌼

This year, our Ecology Team counted nearly 20,000 plants across all sites—an encouraging increase from recent years.

As the only known population of Slender Popcornflower in Canada, this threatened species still requires ongoing care and monitoring. These results show how Parks Canada meets its responsibilities under the Species at Risk Act by supporting the recovery of species such as the Slender Popcornflower through protection, monitoring, and conservation actions in its protected areas.

Be wildlife-wise!
Please resist the urge to feed our adorable raccoon friends. While they may seem cute and cuddly, feeding them can lead to dependency, disrupt their natural behaviour, and even pose risks to their health and safety. 🦝

Let’s protect them by giving them space and keeping snacks to ourselves.

They’re back! 🐦‍⬛

After travelling thousands of miles, Barn Swallows have returned from their incredible migration!

Once a common sight across Canada, these talented nest engineers are now more rare—which makes every sighting feel extra special.

Fun fact: Barn Swallows build their nests from hundreds of tiny mud pellets, each one carefully collected and shaped using their beaks and a bit of teamwork! 🪺

Come celebrate with us on May 23 at Fort Rodd Hill and Fisgard Lighthouse National Historic Sites, Parks Canada.
