Fort Rodd Hill NHS commemorates the national significance of the Victoria-Esquimalt coast artillery fortress in the defence of Victoria and the naval base at Esquimalt harbour, as part of the larger defence strategy of the British Empire and Canada, 1878 to 1956. Fisgard Lighthouse NHS commemorates the national significance of the first lighthouse on Canada's west coast. Fisgard has been an important symbol of sovereignty-British, Colonial and Canadian-since 1860. Along with Race Rocks lighthouse, Fisgard provides a guide for mariners to Royal Roads anchorage, Esquimalt harbour and its naval base, and points the way to Victoria harbour. Q: What’s the brick and concrete fireplace looking structure on the beach next to the jetty?

A: This historic structure is believed to be a chimney remnant from the Royal Engineer Officer Campground, which was located here from around 1905 to 1928.

The area once included several buildings where Royal Engineer officers and their families stayed during summer training exercises. By 1944, only two buildings remained, and by 1962, they had disappeared entirely, leaving behind only traces of this earlier chapter of the site’s history.

Special Feature – Part 9 of 9: A Conversation Across the Waters – P.S.

“Hey Fisgard Lighthouse!

Since today is International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, I wanted to share that the area many call Georgina Point is named QAḴEM LA,E SḴŦAḴ ("seal call" in SENĆOŦEN, the language of the W̱SÁNEĆ people). Indigenous peoples have been here since time immemorial – much longer than me!

Also, I'm now part of ḰENES SOȽ (the Whale Trail), just like you! My site now has beautifully carved benches and an interpretive audio box with Indigenous art, where visitors can learn some SENĆOŦEN words. It's a great way for them to deepen their understanding of this special place.

Yours,
Georgina Point Lighthouse”
