Join us this Tuesday, September 22nd for the launch of Leslie Howard's new novel, Shades of Emily.

📚📚📚

The dark-hued painting that thirty-year-old lawyer Cassie Hastings has been commissioned to buy for millions at auction in New York City comes with a note taped to the back, containing a single line: “To my one true and everlasting love.” The identity of the intended recipient is a mystery, but both painting and message are unquestionably from the same source: the pioneering Canadian artist Emily Carr.

From here on in this engrossing new novel by bestselling author Leslie Howard, Cassie’s life—troubled by an insincere fiancé and a duplicitous colleague—becomes entwined in the experiences of the renowned artist, sending echoes back and forth over a gap of more than a century. As Cassie pursues the possibility that one of her own ancestors is the time-obscured recipient of Emily’s dedication, the tale forms a kind of double helix, with the two women alternating as narrator.

Displaying the attention to historical detail and psychological depth that dew widespread acclaim for her novels The Brideship Wife and The Celestial Wife, Howard conjures a vision of the pressures and heartbreak faced by generations of ambitious women, and the strength these challenges have summoned in them.

Join Leslie as she launches her new novel, Shades of Emily, based on the life of the young Emily Carr.

Carr House is thrilled to be partnering with our colleagues at Victoria Arts Council in collaboration with University of Victoria on a very special presentation of ceramics by the late Judy Cranmer.

Judy Cranmer Tweedie (1935-2009) exhibited across Canada and the United States, including the University of British Columbia’s Museum of Anthropology and the National Museum of the American Indian. Her work is represented in widespread private collections, but only now, after her death, are museums and institutions taking notice of her impressive output. Most recently Judy Cranmer’s work was included in the Vancouver Art Gallery’s Modern in the Making exhibition (2020), and the Museum of Anthropology opened The Judy Cranmer Ceramics Research Laboratory in 2015; both important steps towards ensuring her legacy.

This is the first posthumous solo exhibition of Judy Cranmer’s ceramics, and is co-curated by Kegan MᶜFadden, Executive Director of Victoria Arts Council and Lorilee Wastasecoot, UVic Legacy Galleries Curator of Indigenous Art and Engagement.

Please join us for these public programs:

Curator’s tour with Kegan MᶜFadden, Saturday 26 September @ 2PM as part of the annual Canadian Art Hop.

Panel Discussion moderated by Lorilee Wastasecoot, Saturday 24 October @ 2PM.

Judy Cranmer: Ceramics is organized by Victoria Arts Council with the financial support of the CRD Arts Development Services, BC Arts Council (Community Arts), Province of BC (Community Gaming), and the Victoria Foundation.

Good news! It’s time to pull that short story out of your drawer. You know the one. It’s the story you’ve already started, the one you keep thinking about, the one you wish you could finish. Inspired by Emily Carr’s writing, we’ll think about what’s burning inside you that wants to be written. We’ll ponder your core idea, learn more about your main character, step back to look at the flow, add vivid details, and reflect on the requirements for a great ending (even if it’s a quiet ending).
