Vernon Firefighters support the decision made by West Kelowna Council to prohibit proposed single-egress residential buildings within their community.

We applaud the collaboration between West Kelowna Council and Fire Chief Jason Brolund in working together to reach a decision they believe is in the best interest of public safety and the community as a whole.

While increasing housing supply is important, life safety and emergency access must remain part of the conversation. These types of single-egress buildings are currently approved for construction in Vernon under the recent BC Building Code changes.

A single staircase creates a single point of entry and exit for residents evacuating, firefighters advancing hose lines, and crews performing rescues during an emergency.

As communities continue to grow vertically and increase in density, emergency response infrastructure, staffing, and fire protection standards must keep pace.

We support smart development — but not at the expense of public safety. 🚒

Vernon Fire Rescue Services responded to reports of a structure fire at the Okanagan Science Centre around 7:45 this morning after smoke was seen coming from the building.

Crews located a fire in an alcove at the rear of the heritage building that had extended into the structure.

A few weeks ago, Vernon Fire Rescue Services responded to a townhouse fire that tragically resulted in a fatality.

Depending on where an emergency occurs in Vernon, the first arriving career crew may consist of only 3 or 4 firefighters. When only 3 firefighters arrive first, crews are not permitted to enter a structure for interior fire attack or rescue operations until additional personnel arrive.

With staffing at these levels, critical fireground tasks such as fire attack, primary search, ventilation, command, accountability, and Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) coverage all compete for the same limited personnel.

As Vernon continues to grow, including larger and more complex developments, the demands being placed on Vernon Fire Rescue Services continue to increase.

At a minimum, both career engines should be staffed with 4 firefighters to provide a safer and more effective initial response to major emergencies.

Paid On-Call members continue to provide valuable support, but are currently limited to exterior fireground operations.

We are committed to working with administration and City officials to address these staffing challenges and improve fire protection for our community.

Vernon firefighters will always do everything possible to protect this community.

Public Safety Matters.
Firefighter Safety Matters.
