๐ŸŽ’ Back to school means back to school-zone safety! ๐Ÿšธ

With students returning to classrooms, our streets are once again busier with children walking, cycling, rolling and being dropped off on their way to and from school.

๐Ÿš— Slow down and obey posted school-zone speed limits
๐Ÿ“ต Put your phone away and stay focused on the road
๐ŸšŒ Stop for school buses when their lights are flashing
๐Ÿšธ Watch carefully for children at crosswalks and intersections
๐Ÿšฒ Give people walking, cycling and rolling plenty of space
๐Ÿ‘€ Expect the unexpected, especially around schools and playgrounds

Remember: unless otherwise posted, school zones are 30 km/h from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on school days.

A few extra seconds of patience can help make sure everyone gets to school, and home again, safely.

All City-owned grass sports fields (including baseball diamonds) are temporarily closed due to wet weather. The closure is necessary to protect the turf and ensures the fields stay in good condition for everyone to enjoy.

Field closures also extend to all School District #22 fields and District of Coldstream. Fields are scheduled to reopen tomorrow, unless otherwise noted.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work to keep our fields in great shape.

๐Ÿšจ Update: Vernon Fire Rescue Services (VFRS) continues to respond to the structure fire that occurred in the 2600 block of 43rd Avenue on Monday, Aug. 31.

Firefighters remain on scene alongside the RCMP, and a fire investigation is underway. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, and no injuries have been reported.

Residents can expect to see smoke throughout the day as crews continue to monitor conditions. The firewall performed as intended and helped limit the spread of the fire, reducing damage to the sanctuary.

Thank you to our firefighters, regional fire service partners, the RCMP, BC Emergency Health Services, FortisBC, BC Hydro, and all those who assisted in the response.

No further updates will be provided unless conditions change significantly.
