Our mission is to provide emergency fire, medical and rescue services within the Silver Star Fire Protection District which includes the village itself, as well as the Silver Star Road corridor down to the switchbacks. Silver Star Fire Department (SSFD) was founded in 1989 by then resort owner and fire fighter, Norm Crerar, but has since come under the auspices of the North Okanagan Regional Distr
ict. Originally staffed as an all-volunteer force, the department has evolved into the modern public service it is today, complete with 22 paid-on-call fire fighters, two of which reside at the fire hall on a permanent basis. Additionally, on weekends during the busy ski and mountain bike seasons, the department members volunteer to be on a duty crew consisting of 5 members. Thus, at all hours of the day, in all types of weather, our fire fighters are ready to respond to a range of emergencies, including structure and wild fires, auto-mobile accidents, and first-responder medical emergencies. As the Silver Star mountain community and resort experience unprecedented growth, SSFD will continue to incorporate new approaches, methods and technologies to keep it on the cutting edge of the Canadian fire and rescue service. Our membership is also an integral part of the mountain community, participating in a variety of local safety and public assistance programs, as well as numerous charity and sporting events. Our fire fighters cherish deeply the support of the local community, many of whom have had a hand in the development and direction of SSFD over the years.
