Late in the evening of April 28 the Town of Vermilion Fire Department responded to eight train cars carrying 'PETE COKE,N CALC' that were heating to more than the allowable limit. Working in cooperation with CN officials members of our department were able to cool the train cars to a safe temperature for transporting.
The ladder truck with remote operation made the task easier and safer for our members.
Town of Vermilion administration was aware of the situation and at no time was there any risk or danger to town or residents.

Sunday, March 8, 2026 was a busy day for the Town of Vermilion Fire Department, responding to 8 calls in a time frame from 2:00pm to 6:10pm (back in service). Crews handled a wide range of incidents such as downed power lines, motor vehicle collisions, wind damage, and medical assistance emergencies across our town and surrounding area.

With this many calls in such a short time frame, the Town of Vermilion Fire Department had firefighters available to respond to each call. It's a reminder that as a fire fighter, you never know where you'll be when the pager goes off, but our members are always ready to answer when needed.

Days like this show the dedication and determination of our members. No matter the call, number of calls, or the conditions, our Fire fighters come together as one team, ready to support each other and serve the people who depend on us.

We would also like to extend a thank you to our partners who worked along us that day. EC911 dispatchers,EMS, Vermilion RCMP, Atco as well as the local good Samaritan's who stepped up to help until responders arrived. Your willingness to assist others truly reflects the strength of our community.

We are proud of the commitment shown by our members and grateful for our continued support from our community.

Yours truly Town of Vermilion Fire Chief Anton Krys

Understanding Volunteer Firefighters

Who They Are. What They Do. Why They Matter.

Across Canada, most fire departments are volunteer or mostly volunteer. In many rural and small‑town communities, volunteer firefighters are the only line of defense when emergencies happen.

What “Volunteer Firefighter” Really Means

“Volunteer” does not mean untrained or part‑time in skill. It simply means they are not salaried.

Most volunteer firefighters:
• Hold the same provincial and national certifications as career firefighters
• Complete hundreds of hours of initial training
• Attend ongoing drills and continuing education
• Respond 24/7 from home, work, or wherever they are

They balance emergency response with full‑time jobs, families, and community responsibilities.

What They Respond To

Volunteer firefighters handle far more than fires:
• Structure fires
• Vehicle collisions & extrication
• Medical emergencies
• Wildland & grass fires
• Hazardous conditions
• Severe weather incidents
• Rescue operations
• Public service calls

In many communities, they provide fire protection, rescue services, and first medical response — often all at once.

Training & Standards

Volunteers meet the same safety and operational standards as career departments. Training includes:
• Fire behavior & suppression
• Search & rescue
• Vehicle extrication
• EMS & CPR
• Hazardous materials awareness
• Incident command
• PPE & SCBA operations

All completed on evenings, weekends, and personal time — without pay.

Equipment & Funding

Most volunteer departments:
• Rely on local taxes, grants, and donations
• Fundraise to purchase essential equipment
• Maintain apparatus to strict safety standards
• Stretch limited budgets for gear, fuel, insurance, and training

Many volunteers invest personally — financially and emotionally.

The Personal Sacrifice

When the tones drop, a volunteer firefighter may be:
• Leaving work
• Leaving a family dinner
• Leaving a holiday
• Waking up in the middle of the night

There’s no paycheck at the end of the call — only the knowledge that someone needed help, and they answered.

Why Volunteer Firefighters Matter

Without them:
• Response times would increase
• Rural communities would be left unprotected
• Insurance costs would rise
• Lives, homes, and livelihoods would be at greater risk

Volunteer firefighters protect communities that would otherwise have no protection at all.

How You Can Support Them

Support doesn’t always mean joining the department. It can mean:
• Understanding the time and sacrifice involved
• Supporting local fire levies and funding
• Donating or attending fundraisers
• Showing patience at emergency scenes
• Teaching children respect for first responders
• Simply saying “thank you”

Final Thought

Volunteer firefighters are ordinary people doing extraordinary things — without recognition, without compensation, and often without enough resources.

They are your neighbors.
Your coworkers.
Your friends.
Your family.

And when you need them most, they show up.
