Free bike repair workshop with ASL interpretation!

Deaf community members and ASL signers are invited to learn the basics of bike repair and maintenance in an accessible, hands-on workshop.

Friday, September 25
6:30–9:00 p.m.
VCC - Vancouver Community College, Broadway Campus
Cost: Free

Learn how brakes, gears and bearings work, get basic maintenance tips and practice fixing a flat tire. Participants will also receive tire levers and a patch kit to take home.

: Meet Brenda

Meet Dr. Brenda P**n, Senior Research Fellow and Lead of Community Research, who has been part of the Wavefront Centre team for eight years.

Brenda is passionate about finding ways to make services and community spaces easier for people and their families to navigate and access. Through her work, she supports community, government, industry, and service organizations in finding evidence-based ways to improve accessibility and measure the impact of their programs.

What Brenda enjoys most about her work is the people she gets to work with every day. She is especially proud to be part of a research team that helps organizations turn evidence into meaningful improvements in accessibility, programs, and services.

A fun fact about Brenda: outside of work, she loves taking neighbourhood strolls with her family, especially the four-legged members!

We’re grateful to have Brenda as part of the Wavefront Centre team and to celebrate the knowledge, experience, and passion she brings to our Community Research work.

Did you know? Accessibility Services is more than interpreting.

Wavefront Centre's Accessibility Services team helps organizations create better communication access for Deaf, DeafBlind and Hard of Hearing people.

We offer ASL interpreting and translation, VRI, captioning, accessibility technology, planning and advisory support, and accessible event coordination combining services to create practical solutions for each client, environment and audience.

Accessibility Services is also a Wavefront Centre social enterprise. Revenue generated through these services is reinvested in our community programs, extending the impact of every project.

: Meet David Adetola

This week, we’re featuring David Adetola, Project Coordinator and Communications Officer with Wavefront Centre.

David joined Wavefront Centre four months ago and supports both Community Outreach Services and Communications. He is currently assisting with the Digital Literacy Project and taking on a summer role as Communications Officer.

What David enjoys most about his work is the opportunity to learn, gain valuable experience, and continue developing his professional skills.

A fun fact about David? He is a huge football, or soccer, fan and watches the sport as much as he can!

: The people behind the connection

As part of our year-long celebration of Wavefront Centre’s 70th anniversary, we’re recognizing the people whose work helped make communication more accessible.

This photo, taken between 1984 and 1987, shows two members of the Western Institute for the Deaf’s Message Relay Centre team at the West 7th Avenue office in Vancouver. Working around the clock, specially trained relay operators connected people using TDD/TTY technology with voice telephone users, making conversations possible across British Columbia.

Behind every relay call was a dedicated person helping break down communication barriers—one conversation at a time.
