The dance floor was full of connection, celebration and community spirit at CLBC Simon Fraser Region’s Spring Dance in Burnaby! 🎶

More than 70 people joined the event on May 23 at the Christine Sinclair Community Centre, including individuals served by CLBC, families, support workers, volunteers and community members. The afternoon brought people together through music, dancing, refreshments and conversation in a welcoming and inclusive space.

The Mayor of Burnaby, Mike Hurley, shared opening remarks about the importance of inclusive communities. Burnaby City Councillor, James Wang, also joined the celebration to show support for individuals and families in the community. A special highlight of the day came when Mayor Hurley took to the stage to sing with participants, filling the room with smiles, laughter and energy.

Thank you to everyone who helped make the Spring Dance such a meaningful community celebration!

Today, May 14, is Moose Hide Campaign Day. The campaign began as a BC-born Indigenous-led grassroots movement to engage men and boys in ending violence towards women and children.

It has since grown into a nationwide movement of Indigenous and non-Indigenous Canadians from local communities, First Nations, governments, schools, police forces and many other organizations – all committed to taking action to end this violence.

One way people can mark the day is by wearing a small square of moose hide pin as a symbol of their commitment to honour, respect and protect women, children and all people. In many Indigenous cultures, moose hide is considered medicine and a symbol of healing.

Moose Hide Campaign Day is also a time to listen, reflect and learn from the lived experiences of Indigenous peoples and communities. CLBC stands in solidarity with Indigenous communities and all those impacted by gender based violence in supporting safety, respect, healing and reconciliation.

“We All Need a Home” is a new disability theatre production co-created and performed by self-advocates with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Through storytelling, lived experience, and performance, the play explores the right to inclusive housing and what it means to have a safe place to belong in community.

Presented by the Self Advocate Theatre Company in partnership with the UBC Canadian Institute for Inclusion and Citizenship, Community Living Society, and Massey Theatre, the production continues a series of theatre projects focused on disability rights and social change. It is based on research and lived experience.

Performances take place June 4 to 6 at the Massey Theatre in New Westminster, B.C., and include accessibility features such as ASL interpretation, captions, relaxed performances, plain language programs, and wheelchair seating. Audience members are also invited to join a post-show “Talk Back” with the actors and co-creators.

This week is Emergency Preparedness Week (May 3-9), a reminder to take time to prepare for emergencies and stay connected with the people around us.

As flood, wildfire and extreme heat season approaches in B.C., having a plan and knowing your supports can help keep you and your loved ones safe. Some ways to prepare include:

• Making an emergency plan with family, friends or support workers
• Preparing an emergency kit and grab-and-go bag
• Keeping a list of important contacts, medications and supplies
• Checking in with neighbours and building community connections

This year’s PreparedBC theme is “In it together,” highlighting how communities are stronger when people support one another before, during and after emergencies.

There is a free webinar happening tonight called Preparedness Through Connection, hosted by PreparedBC and Building Resilient Neighbourhoods. The webinar will focus on how social connection and community support can strengthen emergency preparedness.

📅 Thursday, May 7 from 7 to 8 p.m.
Register here: https://bc.healthyagingcore.ca/training-events/webinar-preparedness-through-connection/event

The Self-Advocate Leadership Network (SALN) has also created wildfire preparedness resources to help self-advocates and families prepare for wildfire season: https://acrobat.adobe.com/id/urn:aaid:sc:VA6C2:f98e9c11-530a-42e4-846d-5297b2a1dcc2

CLBC encourages everyone, especially the people and families we support, to take some simple steps to stay safe and be ready.

Preparing for emergencies is more than gathering supplies. It’s about social connection. A strong sense of trust and belonging before an emergency, means people can rely on each other when one occurs. CLBC Community Councils across the province recently hosted a series of welcoming open houses, bringing people together to connect, learn, and get involved in their local communities.

The Vancouver Richmond Community Council held a lively spring drop-in open house, welcoming more than 30 guests for an afternoon of connection, creativity, and conversation. Attendees enjoyed crafts, activities, and refreshments while learning about the role of Community Councils and how they support people in the region. The Council also took time to recognize and thank several members who are moving on, acknowledging their valued contributions and commitment to the community.

At the same time, the Central North Island Community Council hosted an open house focused on engaging new members from across the North Island. Council members shared information about Community Councils and highlighted their Councils PATH (Planning Alternative Tomorrows with Hope) plan, which is guiding their workplan for the year ahead. Community members came together to share food, win prizes, and learn more about opportunities to support their local community.

In the South Okanagan, the Community Council welcomed more than 30 people to an open house designed to inform, connect, and recruit new members. Guests enjoyed food, spin-to-win prizes, and meaningful conversations while learning about the Council’s work and how to get involved.

Thank you to everyone who attended these events and helped make them a success!
