This annual event provides Indigenous Elders with the opportunity to connect with their peers, share experiences and strengthen bonds. We had a booth on site and attendees dropped by for a conversation about investment fraud prevention and to learn more about us.

Nova Scotia Securities Commission warns of scammer impersonating NSSC staff

Halifax – The Nova Scotia Securities Commission is warning Nova Scotians that scammers are impersonating NSSC enforcement staff.

A Nova Scotia resident who was previously a victim of investment fraud received a letter that was purportedly signed by NSSC Commission staff and staff from FINTRAC. The letter also bore the NSSC logo and included a fake file number.

The letter claims to notify the recipient that the NSSC and FINTRAC have approved restitution of their investment loss. The letter instructs the recipient to transfer funds to verify their account, and claims that these funds will be returned along with their restitution payment.

The letter was not sent by the NSSC or FINTRAC and is an attempt at a recovery scam in which scammers attempt to victimize someone for a second time by requesting payment to return previously stolen money.

If anyone says they are with a regulator or law enforcement and claims to be able to get stolen money back, it is a recovery scam. If you are contacted by someone claiming to be from the NSSC and making this offer, whether by email, text, phone, or through the mail, you should report it immediately to the NSSC at (902) 424-7768, 1-855-424-2499, or [email protected].

The Nova Scotia Securities Commission is the provincial government agency responsible for regulating trading in securities and derivatives in the province.
