04 June 2026, Vancouver, British Columbia. On 04 June 2026, the City of Vancouver officially proclaimed June 2026 as Philippine Heritage Month during a formal ceremony at the Vancouver City Hall, personally presided by His Worship Vancouver City Mayor Ken Sim and members of the Vancouver City Council led by Deputy Mayor Sarah Kirby-Yung and Councillors Lenny Zhou and Pete Fry. Accepting the proclamation was Consul General Gina A. Jamoralin of the Philippine Consulate General in Vancouver. The proclamation marks a continuing, deeply meaningful tradition for the city. While the Canadian federal government officially designated June as nationwide Philippine Heritage Month in 2018, the City of Vancouver has actively embedded this celebration into its municipal fabric under Mayor Sim’s leadership. This year's ceremony holds particular significance, arriving at a time when the city and the local diaspora look forward to major milestones, including ongoing advancements toward a dedicated Filipino Cultural Centre in Vancouver.

🇵🇭 Raise Our Flag: Honoring Heritage, Inspiring Pride 🇵🇭

PHILIPPINE NATIONAL FLAG DAYS
MAY 28 - JUNE 12, 2026

The Philippine Consulate General in Vancouver joins the nation in commemorating Philippine National Flag Days. This annual observance marks the first unfurling of the Philippine flag on 28 May 1898 and continues through 12 June, Philippine Independence Day.

The choice of 28 May as the beginning of National Flag Days commemorates the historic Battle of Alapan in Imus, Cavite, where Filipino revolutionary forces under General Emilio Aguinaldo achieved a decisive victory against Spanish troops. Following this triumph, Aguinaldo proudly unfurled the Philippine flag for the first time before the Filipino people — a powerful symbol of the nation’s struggle for freedom.

The flag, sewn in Hong Kong by Marcela Mariño de Agoncillo, features the red and blue fields, a white triangle, and a radiant sun with eight rays alongside three stars – elements that continue to define the Philippine national flag today.

As we commemorate this significant period in our history, the Embassy calls on all Filipinos and friends of the Philippines to proudly raise and display the Philippine flag as a symbol of freedom, unity, and national pride.

More than a tradition, this observance is a reminder of our shared history and the enduring strength of the Filipino spirit.
