Catholic Charities was established during the “Hungry Thirties” under the direction of the Most Reverend William Mark Duke, Archbishop of Vancouver from 1931 to 1964. A registered non-profit organization, Catholic Charities is a well-known brand of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Vancouver. Since its founding, the charity has provided many social services such as the Greater Vancouver Catholic C
redit Union, the Catholic Lending Library and the Catholic Youth Centre Pool. Today, Catholic Charities continues to strongly serve the social needs of Greater Vancouver through: the Catholic Charities Men’s Shelter, Catholic Charities (Prison Ministry), the Refugee Sponsorship program administered by the Office of Service & Justice, and The Door Is Open. Catholic Charities also holds in trust properties for the purpose of developing Catholic health care. Catholic Charities Men’s Shelter (previously Catholic Charities Men’s Hostel) began our mission on the 3rd floor of our Vancouver Archdiocese offices, via the orders of Archbishop Johnson, forming a committee, in October of 1958. The Men’s Shelter was opened 13 months later in November of 1959. Since opening over 60 years ago our emergency Shelter Ministry has grown in many ways. We now offer every day 100+ men a safe place to sleep, nutritious meals eat, showers, clean clothing and help with everything from ID, education, employment, healthcare, mental health, housing and connections to resources and peer service providers all over the Vancouver metro region. We have over 30 full-time and part-time staff positions with our shelter and often have positions available. We have worked closely with our partners, BC Housing and Providence Health Care to safely establish a shelter in part of the Comox building on the St. Our guests’ entrance is located off of Thurlow street, at the very back of the hospital, to keep our guests and our work focused away from the main streets, and our procedures, as well as guest rooms, have been set up with COVID-19 safety measures top of mind.
