MABC - Mining Association of British Columbia

MABC - Mining Association of British Columbia MABC represents the collective needs and interests of operating coal, metal and industrial mineral mining companies.

Established through an act of the BC Legislature in 1901 to represent the interests of BC's mining industry, the Mining Association of British Columbia (MABC) is one of the oldest industry associations in the province. In doing so, it has come to be regarded as the predominant voice of mining in British Columbia.

MABC welcomes the Government of Canada’s announcement on the Productivity Mega Deduction.

“For British Columbia's mining sector, this has the potential to significantly strengthen the investment case for new mine developments, mine expansion projects, and refining and processing facilities in British Columbia. Today’s announcement is truly game changing.

“British Columbia has or produces 22 of the 34 critical minerals on Canada’s critical mineral list and is home to world class mineral projects requiring substantial upfront capital investment years before revenue is generated. The proposed measure will allow for the immediate deductibility of a broad range of eligible assets including machinery, equipment, and infrastructure used to build, operate, modernize, or expand mines, along with equipment used in mineral processing and refining.

“For British Columbia’s mining industry, early access to these deductions will improve project economics, enhance cash flow, reduce the effective cost of investment, and help attract the capital required to move projects expeditiously into construction. BC competes with other global mining jurisdictions for the investment needed to meet the growing demand for critical minerals essential for our economic and national security.

“BC has the critical minerals, precious metals, and steelmaking coal the world needs, a skilled and educated workforce, cost-effective infrastructure and clean electricity, strategic access to global markets, First Nations partnerships, and development opportunities needed to support Canada's economic and strategic priorities all within a stable common-law jurisdiction. BC mining expertise has supported global and domestic mining projects for decades. The Productivity Mega Deduction announced today will accelerate BC’s preferred position as a place to invest across the full mining value chain.

“MABC appreciates the Prime Minister’s and Government of Canada’s leadership in adopting this very welcome tax incentive.”

You don’t need a mine near your community to benefit from mining.

Metro Vancouver and Vancouver Island have no operating mines, yet they account for approx. 20% of the economic benefits generated by BC’s mining industry.

Mining supports businesses and workers across the province — from engineering and environmental services to finance, technology, transportation and equipment supply.

As local leaders gather for the Union of BC Municipalities Convention, an important reminder: mining makes communities stronger.

$90 billion. 27 projects. And on September 23, three of the people working inside it are coming to Terrace to take our questions.

The Terrace & District Chamber of Commerce and the MABC - Mining Association of British Columbia are bringing the BC Chamber Mining Roadshow to the Terrace Sportsplex — a lunch, three speakers, and a straight conversation about what mining development actually means for businesses in this region.

🎤 Featured speakers
Tim McEwan — SVP Corporate Affairs, Mining Association of British Columbia
Brent Murphy — SVP Environmental Affairs, Seabridge Gold
Michael Tilson — COO, Nisg̱a'a Growth Corporation; Director, TCLP

Across BC, 27 proposed mining projects represent an estimated $90 billion in economic activity during development and construction. Several of them are close to home. If you supply, service, hire, house, feed or move things in Northwest BC, you already have a stake in what happens next — this is your chance to ask about it directly instead of reading the answer in a press release six months from now.

📅 Wednesday, September 23, 2026
🕚 Doors 11:00 AM · Program 11:30 AM – 1:00 PM
📍 Banquet Room, Terrace Sportsplex, 3320 Kalum St.

As local government leaders from across BC prepare to gather in Vancouver for the Union of BC Municipalities Convention, here’s a number worth knowing:

For every 10 jobs at a mine site, another 18 jobs are supported elsewhere in BC - including 12 jobs in rural communities across the province and six in Metro Vancouver and Vancouver Island.

Those jobs extend into engineering, transportation, professional services, equipment supply and businesses across BC.

Mining’s economic impact doesn’t stop at the mine gate. It reaches communities throughout the province.

Northern BC is a mining powerhouse. Construction of the NCTL will deliver the clean electricity needed to unlock new mining projects that will generate billions of dollars of economic activity and thousands of high-paying jobs, while strengthening BC, Canadian, and allied critical mineral supply chains.

British Columbia has the critical minerals, precious metals, and steelmaking coal the world needs. As global demand for these materials grows, projects like the NCTL will help make BC and Canada strong by continuing to diversify our markets beyond the United States.

Construction is underway on the North Coast Transmission Line, a major infrastructure project that will expand access to clean power, strengthen electrical reliability, and support the growth of communities, businesses and industry across northern British Columbia while creating thousands of jobs. Vancouver is a mining city.

While BC’s mines are located across the province, much of the expertise, investment and economic activity that supports them is concentrated in Metro Vancouver.

MABC’s Mining and Metro Vancouver Economic Impact Study highlights the important role the region plays in BC’s mining industry:

🔹 More than 12,300 jobs supported in Metro Vancouver and Vancouver Island
🔹 More than $3.5 billion in economic output generated in the region
🔹 22% of all mining-related employment in BC based in Metro Vancouver and Vancouver Island

From engineering and finance to legal, environmental, technology and professional services, Vancouver is a global centre of mining expertise — connecting BC’s resources to investment and markets around the world.
And with a strong pipeline of proposed new and expanded mines, that economic opportunity has room to grow.

Our shared watersheds don’t recognize borders — and neither does our commitment to protecting them.

The swift efforts by the Cambria Gold Mines team, the community of Hyder, the State of Alaska and the U.S. Forest Service to respond to the Salmon River flooding and the efforts to protect Fish Creek (one of the most important salmon spawning habitats) are a powerful example of what can be achieved when communities, governments and industry come together across the BC –Alaska border.

At a time when strong cross-border relationships and collaboration matter more than ever, examples like this demonstrate the value of working together on shared issues.

BC’s mining industry is committed to being a responsible partner in protecting waterways and ecosystems on the BC-Alaska border.

BC’s mining sector is entering a period of significant potential growth.

The province has a generational opportunity to create long‑term, well-paying jobs, attract investment, strengthen communities, and generate tax revenues to support public services for British Columbians.

Realizing the opportunity depends on creating the conditions for new mines to advance.

This includes:
1️⃣ Accelerating permitting and authorizations
2️⃣ Investing in First Nations capacity building
3️⃣ Investing in skills training
4️⃣ Building electrical and transportation infrastructure

BC has the projects, resources, and expertise. Creating the right enabling conditions will turn this opportunity into long‑term benefits for communities across the province.

What could a steady pipeline of new mining projects mean for BC by 2030?

Consider a scenario where construction begins on four new mines each year starting in 2027.

By 2030, that would mean 12 mines under construction and four new mines in operation, generating in that year alone:

🔹 $5 billion in additional GDP
🔹 25,400 more jobs for British Columbians
🔹 $1.7 billion in additional government revenues, including $768 million for the Province of BC

The opportunity builds with each new project. As more mines move from permitting to construction and into operation, the economic benefits grow year after year, supporting workers, and businesses across British Columbia.
