Dame Ethel Smyth’s Mass in D Major

Dame Ethel Smyth was a trailblazing woman composer and suffragette whose music and life defied expectations in a male-dominated world. She wrote the anthem The March of the Women for the British women’s suffrage movement and was deeply involved in activism for women’s rights.

Smyth also stands as an important figure in q***r cultural history, known for her relationships with women and celebrated as a bold, q***r creative whose life challenged norms of her time.

Her Mass in D Major is an uplifting and dramatic choral masterpiece that resonates with themes of resilience, community, and creative freedom.

We’re trying to improve the unique Out on the Shelves (OOTS) library catalogue for q***r books with a grant from UBC & the Canadian government for archives and libraries of marginalized communities that often get lost in regular libraries/labeled with unfortunate descriptions.

In this hour, you'll sort books, search the library, meet other bookworms, play games, and take a couple of user experience surveys to help us improve the library for everyone!

Every participant will receive a $25 honorarium for their trouble!

Kiss The Stormy Sky is coming to Vancouver as part of the inaugural Bring Your Own Body
festival by Odd Meridian Arts from July 17-20, 2025. Created and performed by Sid Ryan Eilers (they/them), this solo dance-theatre work blurs both myth and memory, tracing generations of Q***r ancestry through choreography, spoken text, vivid projection, and a lush original score composed by Shn Shn (she/they).
