Yesterday at City Hall, ABC rejected a plan to make the roads safer.

In the GVRD, 100 people die every year from fatal car accidents. For pedestrians, the evidence is clear that the speed of the car can make the difference between life and death.

Yesterday staff brought a report to bring a moderate handful of tweaks to reduce injuries and save lives in the city.

They voted to make the streets less safe.

Today at the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) Sean Orr's motion to ask the federal government to crack down on annoying and dangerous super-bright american headlights PASSED. ✊

This means that Canadian Municipalities across the country have endorsed COPE's call for headlight safety and support for seniors, people with astigmatism, and other visual impairments.

Let's strike while the iron is hot. Send an email to the Canadian Minister of Transportation and PM Carney to demand action. Link in comments.

Ken Sim has been hiding the impact of his austerity Budget.

On Wednesday he voted to keep you in the dark.

On Wednesday, City Council approved Sean Orr's Motion to push for a $25/month Low-Income Transit Pass for people earning less than $40,000 per year.

The motion calls on the province to bring forward a plan for affordable low-income transit in BC.

This continues the work of COPE in fighting to move towards a free transit system, building on the 2019 COPE motions to advance free transit for kids, which contributed to the policy being adopted province-wide.

With a climate crisis and an affordability crisis, moving towards free transit is something that can help with both at the same time.

This low income transit proposal moves us closer to that goal, targeting support to people who have the deepest need, while we continue to fight for a fare-free transit future.

TODAY at City Hall ABC voted to let Mayor Ken Sim completely off the hook for Misuse of Office and Harassing Conduct against Councillor Sean Orr.

This was the vote on ABC Councillor Montague's motion, "That Council imposes no sanctions and receives the report for information." Rather than take the recommendations of the Integrity Commissioner's office seriously, ABC subjected the investigator to interrogation and voted to avoid any consequences whatsoever for Mayor Sim.

On October 17th, we're going to elect Stephanie Allen and get to work restoring integrity at City Hall.

A COPE-led council majority will make sure that the Integrity Commissioner has the power to take real action and hold politicians accountable that betray the public trust, regardless of how many friends they have on council.

TAKE ACTION: This week COPE Councillor Sean Orr is bringing a motion to City Council for a low-income transit pass. Sign up to speak in support of this important motion: https://vancouver.ca/your-government/request-to-speak-at-meeting-form-4.aspx

With bus fares slated to increase again on July 1st, this is a timely motion. We can't afford more fare hikes and we need to end the chronic underfunding of public transit.

This is just the latest in COPE's long fight to win fast and accessible public transit for all. In January 2019, Jean Swanson passed a motion at Council to push for free transit for kids 12 and under. In September 2021, B.C. implemented that policy across the province.

Learn more about the fight for public transit in this article from the BC Poverty Reduction Coalition.

If we price people out of public transit, what real chance are we giving them to break out of the cycle of poverty?

New text messages have revealed that the 2025 firing of the Victoria School Board proceeded in an unfair and biased way, and they’re being reinstated.

In January of 2025, COPE was the only party in Vancouver to speak out about the unjust firing.

We welcome the reinstatement of these elected local representatives.

It's a clear lesson in why police must stay out of politics.

Join our fight to evict ABC and win a real alternative for Vancouver at City Hall, School
Board, and Park Board.
