IT'S A LUNCH MEET FIESTA! 🪅 A celebration of the neighbourhood's vibrant Mexican community ahead of Mexican Independence Day, our third Friday Lunch Meet is hosted in collaboration with Mexican Barrio Vancouver – featuring live music and a Mexican/Canadian art showcase.⁠

You know how much this neighbourhood loves to throw a lunch party! SFU Vancouver's annual Welcome Back Community BBQ is back next Thursday, September 17 in the Woodward's Courtyard. SFU students, staff, faculty, and members of the community are all invited to a free lunch, live entertainment, and a chance to connect with local businesses in the area. HxBIA will be on site joining the party!⁠

A heritage building you may know a thing or two about: This is the Permanent. ⁠

Built in 1907 by the Permanent Loan Company, the building was designed during a time when this stretch of downtown was emerging as the financial heart of the city and by 1935, it had become a branch of the Bank of Canada. Its original vault door still stands today beneath a stained-glass atrium, and most of its interior details have remained relatively unaltered since it was built.⁠

Now, more than a century after it first opened its doors, the Permanent is a beautiful event venue and home to the Internet Archive of Canada, preserving pieces of our digital history the same way its walls have preserved our city’s. ⁠

In response to ongoing challenges with street litter and f***s around the neighbourhood, we've installed 3 pet waste bag stations across Hastings Crossing and 3 in Gastown in collaboration with the City of Vancouver – part of a wider push to keep our streets clean. These are in addition to our own pilot dispensers. It's a companion effort to our "p**p fairy" program with (an HxBIA member social enterprise!), whose team works 5 days a week in HxBIA and Gastown to respond to street cleaning needs across the neighbourhood.⁠

Street cleanliness is a real challenge in our area, and we're tackling it from every angle we can. Thank you to City of Vancouver, Mission Possible, United We Can, Coast Mental Health, and our other community partners for supporting our cleaning initiatives. ⁠
