On , we reflect on the long journey toward liberation, equity, and freedom. True to our values at the HxBIA, we believe in being a community of reconciliation—one that actively seeks to understand the complexities of our past to consciously steward a more inclusive future.

To honour this history and look toward collective healing, we are proud to highlight our member and vital community organization, Hogan’s Alley Society (.alley).

Historically, divide-and-conquer tactics have isolated neighboring ethnic communities, leading to displacement. To challenge these narratives, Hogan’s Alley Society has partnered with the to launch a new walking tour, which includes examples of how our respective communities have been intentionally divided since the inception of this city, and draws commonalities and connections between stories of the two neighbourhoods.

As an organization rooted in compassion, collaboration, and cultural wisdom, we invite you to join this essential journey. Let’s look at our neighborhood through a lens of unity and shared strength.

Join the tour!

You might have spotted some new wayfinding maps around the city for FIFA highlighting Hastings Crossing BIA and the "Mexican Barrio" in our neighborhood. We’ve seen the chatter online, and we want to take a moment to look at this change through the lens of our mission—and clarify how we navigate growth with integrity. 🧵👇

1/4 First things first: We are not trying to rebrand the Downtown Eastside (DTES). 💛 The DTES is a historic, resilient community made up of beautiful, distinct areas—including Gastown, Chinatown, Strathcona, and the Hastings Crossing area. We honor and celebrate the DTES in everything we do, and we remain dedicated to being conscious stewards who empower, rather than displace, our neighborhood's history.

2/4 We aren't new here, either. Since 2011, our BIA has been on the ground at this unique physical and symbolic crossroads. Founded by local small businesses, social enterprises, and non-profits, we believe in a compassionate, intersectional economy where community safety, social innovation, and inclusion go hand-in-hand.

3/4 The "Mexican Barrio" designation on the FIFA maps isn’t a corporate replacement of our history—it’s a grassroots celebration of a beautiful organic shift. Over the last few years, we’ve seen a huge increase in the Mexican diaspora, with over two dozen Mexican-owned businesses choosing this area to build their dreams. This initiative was pitched by these local owners to celebrate their growing cultural footprint, and along with our friends at , we are helping to celebrate and amplify this. We encourage you to follow for more!

4/4 As the world arrives for the World Cup, we are proud to champion these amazing entrepreneurs alongside the non-profits and social enterprises that anchor us. Our vision has always been to support a resilient, inclusive local economy where everyone belongs. Come by, support a social enterprise, experience our eclectic heart, and welcome our newcomers! 🗺️✨
