And tug-of-war and badminton, volleyball, burgers, co****le, a watermelon eating contest--did we mention the gelato?

Thanks to our fabulous STARZ team for organizing the event, and for staff and family/friends/pets for making it out. We love getting together and connecting outside of work, especially on gorgeous summer days like this past Saturday.

Group pic forthcoming in our July newsletter, if you can stomach the wait. 🍉🍧⛱

Today, on National Indigenous Peoples Day, we celebrate the cultures, histories, teachings and contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples across these lands.

We also recognize the resilience of Indigenous communities. We acknowledge a history in which Indigenous languages, ceremonies, traditions and ways of life were actively restricted, and we honour the generations who carried those teachings forward.

At Community Builders, we are grateful to walk alongside Indigenous residents, staff, Elders, Knowledge Keepers and community partners who strengthen our work every day. Through Indigenous wellness programming, ceremony, cultural connection and community-building, we continue to learn from teachings that remind us of the importance of respect, kindness, relationship and collective care.

Six months ago, Yasin was staying in a shelter.

An electrical engineer by trade, he had relocated to Vancouver from Montreal and was struggling to find stable work and housing. After exhausting his savings, he spent his first night in a shelter.

"It was shameful to stay in a shelter," he admits.

When he came to Hornby Shelter a few months ago, Yasin connected with Community Builders' Housing Outreach Program. Working together, we helped him secure a rental subsidy and connect with a landlord partner in our housing network.

Not long ago, Yasin moved into his own apartment.

Today, he works as a technician at a bike and scooter rental shop and is looking forward to a busy summer season. He says the experience changed the way he sees people and the world around him.

"Those few months gave me my whole life back."

Every person who experiences homelessness has a different story. What they share is a need for something fundamental: safe, stable housing.

Thank you to all our shelter and Outreach staff for the incredible work they do helping folks like Yasin get back on their feet.

The Community Builders family is deeply saddened by the passing of Spike Harris, one of our Directors and an unsung hero in Vancouver’s housing and harm reduction community.

Spike spent more than two decades supporting people in the Downtown Eastside, beginning as a casual support worker at PHS in 2000 before joining the Insite team, North America’s first legal supervised consumption site. From there, they moved into leadership roles with PHS and Vancouver Coastal Health before joining Community Builders in 2025.

Spike described themself as a “harm reduction rockstar," and we agree: they brought courage, heart and a fierce commitment to saving lives and standing with people too often pushed to the margins.

So many people are here today because Spike showed up, night after night, year after year, with the belief that this work matters.

We’re grateful for the time Spike spent with Community Builders, and for the deep legacy they leave across Vancouver’s housing and harm reduction community.

Thank you, Spike.

Rest in power.

Today, Community Builders marks , a day to honour Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and 2-Spirit people.

The red dress is a reminder of lives taken, loved ones still missing and the ongoing impacts of colonial violence, racism and systemic injustice.

We hold space today for families, communities and all those carrying these losses.

Meet our Property Management brain trust -- Supun, Seema, Sharla, Gavi and Pawel. 🔨🏘🧯

At Community Builders, we keep maintenance in house so our work stays aligned with our values. That means approaching residents with compassion and respect, every time.

Our Property team helps keep our buildings clean, safe and in good repair. More than that, they help create spaces people can take pride in. These are not just buildings, they are home. Check out our newsletter and/or website for the full story on their impact.
