Started rewiring your smoke alarms and now you’re staring at a ceiling full of wire nuts that won’t talk to each other?
That hanging module is often a smoke alarm relay — the piece that makes every hardwired alarm sound at once, or that kicks on lights or a siren when one unit goes off.

This is where DIY jobs stall in Lower Mainland homes:
• Mixing Kidde and BRK/First Alert on the same interconnect
• A leftover relay from another brand
• Extra wire colours in the ceiling with no labels
• One new alarm, the rest 10+ years old
• Units that chirp, stay silent, or all scream with no smoke
Hardwired smoke alarms are not plug-and-play across brands. Mix them without the right listed relay or a same-brand swap and you can lose the “one sounds, all sound” protection you actually need.

We see this weekly in Maple Ridge, Surrey, Coquitlam, Burnaby, and across the Lower Mainland. We identify the circuit, test the interconnect, remove leftover junk, and finish with compatible 10-year Kidde units.
Inspection is $99.99. Disposal and a 30-day warranty included. Taxes extra.

Don’t leave live interconnect wires hanging. Book the visit and we’ll close the box properly.

That chirp at 2 a.m. is usually a battery or a 10-year unit saying it is done. Not a fire. Still not something you want to diagnose on a vaulted ceiling in the dark.

We do residential smoke and CO in the Lower Mainland. Maple Ridge based. Flat $99.99 service fee, units extra.

It's 3 AM. You're dead asleep. Then: CHIRP.

You stumble out of bed, rip the smoke alarm off the ceiling, and pull the battery just to make it stop. Sound familiar?

Here's what's actually happening — as temperatures drop at night (and September nights in Maple Ridge are starting to get cold), the voltage in your alarm's battery dips just enough to trigger the low-battery warning. It's not random. It's physics.

But here's the problem: most people pull the battery and never put it back. Now you've got a dead alarm on a shelf somewhere, and zero protection if something actually happens.

Instead of yanking the battery at 3 AM:
• Replace the battery in the morning (9V or AA, depending on the unit)
• Better yet — upgrade to a 10-year sealed lithium battery alarm. No more battery swaps, no more midnight chirps
• If your alarm is over 10 years old, that chirp might be telling you the whole unit has expired

Not sure what you're dealing with? That's literally what we do.

Heading out for the long weekend? Here's a 5-minute checklist before you lock up.

Labour Day weekend is the unofficial end of summer — camping trips, family BBQs, a few days away from it all. But before you leave the house empty, take a walk through and press the test button on every smoke alarm.

No beep? That's not just annoying. That's a dead alarm in an empty house.

Here's what to check:
— Every smoke alarm should chirp when you press test
— Your CO detector should be active — especially with gas appliances
— Flip your alarms over and check the manufacture date. Smoke alarms expire after 10 years. If the date reads 2016 or earlier, it's time for a replacement.

We do smoke alarm inspections and replacements across Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, and the rest of the Lower Mainland. Takes about an hour, and you'll head out for the weekend knowing your home is actually protected.

Book before you go — you'll be glad you did.

Got a basement suite? Your smoke alarms might not be up to code.

If your home has a secondary suite — a basement suite, laneway house, or in-law unit — there's a very good chance your smoke alarms don't meet current BC building code.

Here's what the code requires:

→ Smoke alarms must be interconnected between the main dwelling and the suite. When one alarm goes off, every alarm in the building goes off.
→ Carbon monoxide detectors are required wherever there's a fuel-burning appliance or attached garage.
→ Every level, every sleeping area, and every hallway outside bedrooms needs an alarm.

Why does this matter? If a fire starts in your tenant's suite at 2 AM, an interconnected system doesn't just alert them — it wakes you and your family up too.

In our experience, most homes with secondary suites in Maple Ridge and the Lower Mainland are NOT currently up to code. But the fix is usually straightforward and more affordable than people expect.

We specialize in smoke alarm and CO detector inspections and installations. We know the BC code and we'll make sure your home is properly protected — for you and your tenants.

New school year. New backpacks. Same old smoke alarms from 2014?

Back-to-school season means new routines for the whole family. While you're buying school supplies and setting up schedules, add one more thing to the list: check your smoke alarms.

Most families don't realize smoke alarms have an expiry date. After 10 years, the sensors degrade and they stop responding the way they should. Some stop working entirely — even with a good battery.

Here's a quick back-to-school fire safety checklist:

✓ Test every smoke alarm in your home (press and hold the test button)
✓ Flip the alarm over and check the manufacture date on the back
✓ Replace any alarm older than 10 years — no exceptions
✓ Make sure you've got one in every bedroom, hallway, and on every level
✓ Walk your kids through your fire escape plan — do they know two ways out of every room?

15 minutes now could make all the difference later.

We do smoke alarm inspections and installations across Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, and the Lower Mainland. If you're not sure your home is up to standard, we'll come check — no pressure.

Wildfire smoke has been rolling through the Lower Mainland all month. If you're sealing up your home to keep the air out — good call.

But here's what most people miss: when your house is sealed tight, carbon monoxide from gas appliances, attached garages, and even blocked vents has nowhere to go.

Your CO detector is the only thing standing between you and a gas you can't see, smell, or taste.

Quick check right now:
— Press the test button on every CO detector in your home
— If it chirps or doesn't respond, the battery or the unit needs replacing
— If you don't have one on every level, you're not up to code

Smoke alarms get all the attention. But during wildfire smoke season, your carbon monoxide detector is doing the real work.

Need a proper inspection? We cover Maple Ridge and the entire Lower Mainland. Link in bio or call us direct.
