Dear Residents,

A full closure of Highway 4 is planned for Wednesday, September 23 between 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM for key safety-related work along Cameron Bluffs.

The timing will allow this work to be completed before inclement winter weather and help ensure the highway remains safe and reliable through the winter.

The Ministry of Transportation and Transit has confirmed that they will be able to accommodate Emergency Vehicle Access during the closure if needed.

Digital message boards will be placed on the highway in both directions to ensure that commuters are aware of the upcoming closure.

The planned closure, including a map of the closure area, has been posted on DriveBC and can be seen by visiting their website.

Dear Residents,

Cameron McKieve has wrapped up his role as Ucluelet’s Wildlife Safety Response Officer (WSRO). Over the summer he helped support the work of conservation officers to enhance public safety and reduce human-wildlife conflicts. This was a joint initiative whereby the WSRO is employed by the BC Conservation Officer Service and funded by the District of Ucluelet for a four-month period.

Cameron's time was spent addressing businesses and residents in non-compliance of municipal and provincial regulations regarding wildlife attractants. As well as responding to any human wildlife conflict events that occurred in the area.

There was a 93.3% decrease in the number of black bear reports compared to last summer.

In general, the Bylaw Enforcement Officer’s mandate is to obtain and enforce general compliance with the provisions of the bylaws relating to the health, safety and welfare of the community.

At the Tuesday, September 8, 2026 Special Council Meeting, Mr. McKieve was officially appointed by Council and will now be authorized to issue tickets for violations of all District bylaws. The District is thrilled to have Cameron in the role.
