🌲 2026 Atlantic Teachers’ Tour — Days 3 & 4! 🌲
Forests Worth Knowing
What an incredible finish to the 2026 Atlantic Teachers’ Tour held in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia during Aug 10-13! Over Days 3 and 4, our teachers from across all four Atlantic provinces continued exploring the many dimensions of Atlantic Canada’s forests — from private woodlot management and ecological forestry to Indigenous knowledge, forest conservation, technology, climate change and forestry education and careers.
🌳 Day 3 — From Private Woodlots to Two-Eyed Seeing
Our day began at Kevin Veinotte’s woodlot, where Kevin and our guest speakers provided an in-depth look at private woodlot management and ecological forestry. Teachers explored:
🌲 Woodlot management history, planning and decision-making
🌿 Ecological forestry, gap harvesting and best management practices
🌳 Silvicultural approaches, partial overstory removal and manual weeding
💧 Fish habitat, stream restoration and special management zones
🐦 Research and biodiversity considerations, including MTRI’s bird research
Thank you to Kevin Veinotte for opening his woodlot and sharing his knowledge and experience, as well as Patricia Amero, Michelle Young, Maggie Davidson of MTRI, and Jeff Ogden of NS DNRR for sharing their expertise.
We then travelled to Asitu’l~sk, where Chris Googoo, Chief Operating Officer with Ulnooweg, led a powerful woodland walk and talk exploring Two-Eyed Seeing (Etuaptmumk), Treaty history and responsibilities, relationships with the land, and Mi’kmaq concepts including Netukulimk and Msit No’kmaq.
Teachers also learned about the history of Asitu’l~sk, land back, and the Hemlock Conservation Program, including efforts to address Hemlock Woolly Adelgid and engage communities in conservation.
The evening included the ever popular Treevia Night.
🌲 Day 4 — Looking to the Future of Forestry
Our final day focused on the future of the forest sector and the people, technology, and education that will shape it starting with an engaging World Café station style lightning rounds focused on post-secondary education and forestry career pathways.
Followed by a presentation on new technologies, research and adapting to climate change in the forest sector with Jordan Green of J.D. Irving, Limited.
The hands-on sessions included:

🪵 Forestry programs and opportunities at NSCC
🌲 Environmental programs at CÉGEP
🚜 J.D. Irving harvesting simulators
We wrapped up the tour with reflection, evaluations, certificates, and educational resources — celebrating an incredible four days of learning, connection and discovery.
