Last week, we were pleased to welcome the Minister of Emergency Management, Kim Masland, for a visit. It was a great opportunity to showcase the work being done by Colchester REMO, including our recently developed Structural Protection Unit (SPU) that will be deployed to protect critical infrastructure in the event of a wildfire.

Environment Canada has issued a yellow warning for heat for August 6th and 7th. If you do not have air conditioning, there are public places to cool down such as malls, rec centers, and the library. If you are staying home drink lots of water and avoid warmer areas of the house. Placing cool, damp face cloths or hand towels around your forearms or the back of your neck can also help keep you cool. For those who are working outside, the chart below will help you recognize when you have a heat emergency, and to call 9-1-1.

Who is most vulnerable during extreme heat?
-infants, young children, and the elderly
-people with chronic illnesses such as breathing issues, heart problems or mental illness
-people that have to work in the heat
-the unhoused population

Look out for yourself, family, friends, and neighbors during this heat and check out the graphic below to recognize the symtoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

From Environment Canada for Colchester County:

"A period of hot and humid weather expected.

Time span: today, Friday, and Saturday.

Maximum temperature today: 29 to 32 degrees Celsius (Humidex: 36 to 39).
Minimum temperature tonight: 17 to 20 degrees Celsius.
Maximum temperature Friday: 29 to 33 degrees Celsius (Humidex: 37 to 40).
Minimum temperature Friday night: 17 to 20 degrees Celsius.
Maximum temperature Saturday: 28 to 31 degrees Celsius (Humidex: 35 to 38).

Remarks: Cooler conditions can be expected along parts of the Atlantic coast.

Take action to protect yourself and others – extreme heat can affect everyone’s health. Determine if you or others around you are at greater risk of heat illness. Check on older adults, those living alone and other at-risk people in-person or on the phone multiple times a day."

The Colchester Regional Emergency Management Organization will be at the Onslow Belmont Firehall on Wednesday, June 24th at 6:30pm.

We will discuss the importance of knowing the risks in your community and how to be prepared for 72-hours if an emergency did occur.

Colchester REMO will also have FireSmart Canada information available to show you how to make your property more resilient to wildfires.
