Ontario’s screen industry is making meaningful progress on sustainability!

The new Action Ontario 2024/2025 Report, commissioned by Ontario Green Screen and prepared by Producing for the Planet, shows that participating Ontario producers reported nearly 1,200 climate actions in 2025, up from just over 800 actions in 2024.

The report highlights encouraging momentum across the sector, including:
✅ Strong leadership in waste reduction and diversion practices
✅ Increased use of local vendors and travel reduction strategies
✅ Significant growth in sustainable storytelling and on-screen climate action
✅ More sustainability planning, training, and dedicated sustainability roles on productions
✅ Growing adoption of practices that reduce both environmental impact and production costs

As Canada’s largest production jurisdiction, Ontario is helping demonstrate that sustainable production is not only possible but increasingly becoming standard practice.

While the results are encouraging, the report also identifies opportunities to strengthen training, build sustainability expertise, and further embed climate action into leadership and business practices across the industry.

Meet this month's Ambassador, Rachel Oldfield.

With more than 25 years in the film industry, Rachel is helping redefine what's possible on set.

Through smarter planning and innovative thinking, she helped save approximately $12,000 in diesel costs and avoided emissions by reducing generator use. She also diverted the vast majority of food waste through composting initiatives, and by championing food donation programs that keep surplus meals out of landfills, resulting in approximately 7000 meals getting into the hands of people who needed them.

Her work proves that sustainability isn't an add-on - it's a smarter way to produce! Second Harvest can help your production donate leftover food and redistribute it to the local community at no cost! Install the app and find out more at secondharvest.ca.

Join a fun and interactive community meeting learning about how Virtual production is transforming how we shoot - replacing travel, large builds, and unpredictable location logistics with controlled, in-studio environments.

For crews, that means less time spent moving gear and more time shooting efficiently; for producers, it means measurable reductions in carbon footprint without sacrificing quality.

The result: fewer trucks, fewer flights, less material waste - and a more efficient, flexible way to bring stories to life without compromising creative vision.
