September is Ukrainian Heritage Month — a time to celebrate the stories, traditions, creativity, and contributions of Ukrainians in Canada, past and present.

Those stories reach back more than 135 years. In 1891, Wasyl Eleniak and Ivan Pylypow, from the village of Nebyliv in western Ukraine, became the first documented Ukrainian settlers in Canada. After arriving in Montréal, they made their way west to Alberta, helping to begin a much larger story of Ukrainian immigration, community-building, and cultural preservation in Canada.

Their story also has a connection to our current exhibition, Testament • Zapovit. Eleniak lived near Lamont, Alberta, where the family of artist Ihor Rodion Dmytruk later settled, and likely crossed paths with Dmytruk’s father through the local Ukrainian Catholic community. Testament ▪︎ Zapovit is on view at 620 Spadina Avenue until October 17, 2026.

This month, we invite you to celebrate the many generations who have carried Ukrainian heritage forward — and the ways it continues to evolve today. 💙💛

Do you have Ukrainian art, handcrafted pieces, or cultural items that are ready to find a new home? Our Boutique Committee is seeking donations of Ukrainian items that can be resold as Baba’s Treasures. Proceeds from their sale directly support the Museum’s programming and operations, helping us continue to preserve, celebrate, and share Ukrainian cultural heritage.

If you have items you would like to donate, please contact us at 416-923-9861 or [email protected]. Thank you for your generosity and support for the Ukrainian Museum of Canada, Ontario Branch.

We are especially interested in:
• Ukrainian embroidery, including vyshyvanky and embroidered linens
• Woodcraft and carved wooden items
• Ceramics and pottery
• Traditional folk art and decorative items from all regions of Ukraine
• Original woodcuts, linocuts, and other hand-pulled prints
• Ukrainian artwork, books, accessories, and other cultural items

The Museum also welcomes donations of artifacts with unique histories, documented stories, or known provenance. Historically or culturally significant artifacts may be considered for accession into the Museum’s permanent collection, where they can help preserve and share Ukrainian cultural heritage for future generations.

Discover the traditional Ukrainian art of vybiika block printing and create your own patterned eco-tote using simple potato stamps inspired by folk motifs.

Instructor Olha Tkachenko is a Canadian-Ukrainian artist based in Toronto with a formal Fine Arts education from Ukraine. With over 15 years of experience as a freelance illustrator and artist, she has developed a versatile practice that blends classic media with rich Ukrainian folklore techniques.

Congratulations to the Ukrainian Museum of Canada - National, Saskatoon on national recognition for Folk Imaginaries: Ukrainian Clothing as Memory and Imagination.

The exhibition has received a Silver Award of Excellence from Interpretation Canada, recognizing its outstanding interpretive planning, exhibition design, visitor experience, and storytelling.

Curated by Natalka Chomiak, Folk Imaginaries brings together historic garments, contemporary fashion, photography, and multimedia to explore Ukrainian clothing as a living expression of identity, memory, creativity, and resilience.

Recognition like this speaks to the strength of Ukrainian cultural work being created and shared across Canada, and to the people and institutions finding thoughtful new ways to connect heritage with the present.

Congratulations to the Ukrainian Museum of Canada, the exhibition team, collaborators, staff, and volunteers on this well-deserved achievement.

The exhibition remains on view in Saskatoon until August 28, 2026.

Community herbalist Dionne Jennings walks us through the plants, the remedies and the rituals: wax pouring, egg rolling, bonesetting, the evil eye. What stuck in Canada and what didn’t.

Bring a memory from your own family. A baba’s garden, a home remedy, a story you half remember. We want to hear it.
