Last week we posed the question for NationalAccess Ability Week, "What is one change you would like to see from the government to better address accessibility barriers experienced by people with disabilities?"

In February, CILT’s Wendy Porch highlighted key areas in her deputation to the City’s Budget Subcommittee:

1. Lack of accessibility coordination

2. Urgent need for housing supports

3. Accessible transit

4. Disability-specific Poverty Reduction Strategy

We were thrilled to participate in this year's AccessFest today at David Pecaut Square in downtown Toronto. CILT was one of a wide range of orgs exhibiting at this outdoor accessibility fair.

Big Shoutout to AccessNow and event partners for Year 2 of this community festival that advances accessibility, not as an add-on, but as foundational to building a disability inclusive Canada- and a movement.

“When governments work alongside those most affected and design policies that reflect real needs, we can achieve lasting change. This is why a human rights-based approach offers a clear and effective path forward to address Canada’s housing crisis and build a more inclusive future.”
– Marie-Josée Houle, Federal Housing Advocate

CILT is proud to mark Independent Living Across Canada Day today on June 1st. Recognized annually, this day promotes the human right of people with disabilities in Canada to live with autonomy, inclusion and independence in their communities.

At a time of growing erosion of these rights, CILT calls on all societal sectors to advance bold progress towards people with disabilities realizing these rights.

Last year, CILT celebrated 40 years of empowering people with disabilities to live independently and control their own lives.

It's National AccessAbility Week and we want to honour it by sharing CILT’s commitment to accessibility!

Access is a core principle of Independent Living. It's a necessary step towards dignified equity and inclusion for disabled people. We strive and advocate for embedding accessibility into programs and services from the start.
