Erin Small went to the police seeking justice after a sexual assault. Instead, she says the system left her feeling retraumatized, facing a countercharge, and watching the original case end with a peace bond instead of a trial.
Her experience isn’t unique—research shows survivors of intimate partner violence are sometimes criminalized alongside, or even instead of, their abusers, while fear of countercharges, being retraumatized, or, worse, not being believed at all, keeps many from reporting violence at all.
No survivor should have to fear the justice system when asking for help. That’s why this petition calls for meaningful reforms to protect victims, strengthen accountability, and restore confidence in Canada’s justice system.
