👋 Meet Professor Gabriel D. Patrón (ChemE), who joined the faculty earlier this month as an assistant professor. Patrón's research uses AI and mathematical optimization to make chemical manufacturing and energy systems more efficient and sustainable, with a focus on keeping those models interpretable so engineers can trust them.

In a new Q&A, Patrón (a U of T Engineering alum himself) shares what led him to chemical engineering, his approach to teaching through live problem-solving and computer labs, and his advice for students interested in computational research.

🎉 Welcome to ChemE, Gabriel and Pete!

We’re thrilled to welcome two new colleagues to the Department of Chemical Engineering & Applied Chemistry! Assistant Professor of Process Intensification Gabriel D. Patrón and Associate Professor of Nuclear Engineering Peter Keech - both of whole officially joined us on August 1.

🔹 Gabriel Patrón returns to the department where he began his engineering journey. His research brings together artificial intelligence, mathematical modelling and chemical engineering, and he is looking forward to helping shape the next generation of chemical engineers.

🔹 Peter Keech studies how materials degrade over time, with a focus on improving the long-term safety of nuclear waste containment systems. His research contributes to Canada’s efforts to safely manage nuclear waste and support a low-carbon energy future.

What happens to indoor air quality when wildfire smoke fills the skies?

ChemE students Jenn Xu and Katerina Sajeniouk investigated by deploying and calibrating air quality sensors throughout the Wallberg Building during Toronto’s recent wildfire smoke event.

Their hands-on research can help us better understand how engineering can support healthier indoor environments. 🌎

Engineering beyond the classroom! ⚙️

CEGSA recently took graduate students on a tour of the GTAA Cogeneration Plant at Toronto Pearson Airport, where they explored how large-scale energy systems power one of Canada’s busiest transportation hubs.

Master of Engineering (MEng) Community Spotlight 🎤

5 questions with… Huilin Liu (ChemE MEng candidate):

🔬 What MEng experience has had the most impact on you so far?

One of the most memorable experiences has been my MEng project in Professor Diosady’s Food Engineering Lab. Our lab works on food fortification technologies that can help reduce anemia and nutrient deficiencies in developing regions by adding vitamins and minerals into salt and other food matrices. Being able to contribute, even in a small way, to real-world impact has been incredibly inspiring.

🧂 What is the focus of your MEng project?

It focuses on developing a simple field-testing method to determine whether fortified salt contains the required amount of folic acid. The project is still ongoing, and I’m currently working on a paper publication and exploring possible patent-related steps.

💃 What do you like to do outside the classroom?

I currently dance jazz and heels, even though I had no prior experience before starting. I wanted to challenge myself and discovered a real passion. I also have a Work Study position, where I prepare the newsletter for ChemE MEng students. I really enjoy the opportunity to contribute to the community in this way.

🌊 What’s your favourite thing to do in Toronto?

I enjoy spending time by the lake. It always reminds me that the world is much bigger than whatever is stressing me out. I also really enjoy visiting the Toronto Islands with my friends. Looking back at the city from the island always gives me a peaceful and relaxing feeling.

🎯 What do you hope to do after graduation?

I hope to continue working in a field related to what I’ve been studying, as I’m genuinely passionate about it and would love to keep contributing to this area. I’m also very grateful for all the opportunities I’ve had at U of T, and I hope to stay connected as an alum.
