Kicking off 2026 by looking back at some big milestones from 2025! 🎬

From research and education to advocacy on campus and beyond, 2025 was about showing up and building momentum together.

Here’s a look back →

📚 Published two student housing research reports
SHIMMIR: Student Housing in Mississauga, Municipal Impact Report & MTH Report: On ‘Illegal’ Multi-tenant Houses in the Village at York University.

🔎 Launched 2 housing surveys: Filling critical gaps in data on how students live, study, commute and turning those insights into actionable recommendations that reflect REAL student housing needs.

🏠 Facilitated housing education workshops all through the year: fall, spring, summer & winter! And collaborated with some awesome folks along the way!

✏️ Finally answered the question: ‘What if students designed their own living spaces?” by hosting our first-ever student housing design consultations at YorkU!

High rents. Long commutes. Housing stress.

For many students in Mississauga, this is part of their student housing experience.

📊 More than 1 in 10 UTM students considered dropping out due to housing stress.

🏠 Our research at UTM focused on gathering insights from students about their housing challenges, ranging from inaccessibility to unaffordability.

We compiled our findings into a research report titled SHIMMIR—Student Housing in Mississauga: Municipal Impact Report.

And, It’s finally time to reveal the VISA Gift Card winners for UTM Student Housing Survey! 🎟️ Stay tuned for the announcement.

It’s National Housing Day!

A moment to recognize the human right to a safe, dignified, and affordable home. And while the federal Build Canada Homes program is a step toward more non-market housing, Ontario’s Bill 60 is moving in the opposite direction.

Bill 60 hands more power to private developers, lets cities bypass their own official plans, and opens the door to more high-end, unaffordable towers near GO stations — all while the public covers the infrastructure costs.

For tenants, the impacts are even harsher: cheaper, faster evictions, shorter notice periods, and new fees just to appeal. And student renters in particular, will be the most affected.

Although there’s much to celebrate on National Housing Day, Bill 60 highlights why we need stronger protections for renters and thoughtful, community-led housing solutions.

This week, we’re releasing new research on the state of student housing in Mississauga and a detailed breakdown of Bill 60’s implications. Keep an eye out for the updates!
