Meet Mikayla 💛

Mikayla is 9 years old and full of life, laughter, and light. She’s a competitive ballroom dancer who loves being on stage, performing, going to concerts, spending time with friends and family, and cuddling with her dog, Rosie.

She’s funny, caring, curious, incredibly social, and has a way of bringing joy wherever she goes.

On December 19, 2024, Mikayla’s mom noticed a large bruise on her thigh. A visit to her paediatrician the next day led to bloodwork, and on December 21, a phone call changed everything.

Mikayla was rushed to the emergency room, where her family learned she had leukemia.

She was diagnosed with Mixed Phenotype Acute Leukaemia (MPAL), a rare and aggressive form of blood cancer, and began chemotherapy the very next day.

Since then, Mikayla has faced an incredibly difficult treatment journey, including chemotherapy toxicity, an acute kidney injury, and changes to her vision. Through it all, she has shown extraordinary strength and courage.

But cancer is only one part of Mikayla’s story.

She is still the girl who loves to dance. To perform. To sing along at concerts. To make people laugh. To be surrounded by the people and animals she loves.

And throughout journeys like Mikayla’s, Chai Lifeline Canada is there to help families hold on to moments of normalcy, joy, connection, and support through the hardest days.

This Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, we’re sharing the stories of incredible children like Mikayla and honouring every child and family facing childhood cancer. We are privileged to stand beside them.💛

For families facing childhood illness, the Yom Tov table may look a little different this year. But wherever they are, Chai Lifeline Canada is there with care, support, and a community beside them.
