One decision can define your entire career.

A recent incident out of Winnipeg highlights what can happen when control is lost in a security situation. What began as a suspected shoplifting intervention escalated into an incident now being investigated as assault involving a prohibited weapon, with potential criminal charges, civil liability, and long-term reputational damage.

This wasn’t just a bad moment. It was a breakdown in judgment, training, and emotional control.

In security, composure is not optional. The expectation is clear: once a situation is under control, the use of force must stop. Anything beyond that is no longer protection, it becomes liability.

There are a few important takeaways from this:

Control must always come before aggression.
Training must override instinct.
Professionalism must outweigh ego.

When those principles are not followed, the consequences extend far beyond a single incident.

For companies and clients, this raises an equally important question. If your security provider cannot clearly demonstrate structured use-of-force training, de-escalation protocols, and documented, court-defensible standards, you are not just hiring a service, you are assuming risk.

For those working in the field, the reality is even more direct. One incident like this can impact your career, your future opportunities, your financial stability, and in some cases, your freedom.

This is why we continue to emphasize the importance of training, accountability, and mindset across the industry.

Real protection is not about appearance. It is about discipline, control, and making the right decision under pressure.

Stay aware. Stay trained. Stay in control. hashtag

"Security Undertrained? The 40-Hour Licensing Question"

This week on The Sentinel Mindset, we’re diving into a hot-button issue: Is 40 hours of training enough to handle the real-life crises security guards face?

We break down how minimal licencing requirements—like the standard 40-hour course—might leave guards underprepared, especially when facing mental health crises or violent situations.

We’ll peel back the layers from a business angle, too—how margins often sideline advanced training and what that means for the industry.

Tune in as we ask tough questions and explore what needs to change.

Are Security Guards First Responders?

It’s a question that’s gaining momentum as frontline violence continues to increase across Canada — and today onĀ The Sentinel Mindset, we dive deep into it.

We’re joined byĀ Steven Summerville, VP of Sentinel Security, andĀ Paul Carson, President of the Security Guard Association of Ontario (SGAO), to break downĀ Bill S-233 — federal legislation introduced in September 2025 to increase penalties for assaulting first responders and health-care workers.
Bill S-233 has:

* Passed the Senate
* Completed first reading in the House of Commons
* Not yet law — now moving through debate and committee review

But here’s the issue…

Despite responding to overdoses, violent incidents, weapons calls, medical emergencies, and beingĀ first on sceneĀ in malls, shelters, transit systems, residential buildings, and hospitals — Licenced security professionals are still NOT recognized as first responders under this legislation.

As violence grows and responsibilities increase, the question becomes:

* Should security finally be recognized as first responders?
* What will it take to amend this bill?
* And why is this recognition long overdue?

This week’s episode breaks down the legislation, the gaps, and what needs to change to protect those who protect the public.

What's your thoughts? Are Security Guards First Responders?

A disturbing event in Baltimore serves as a stark reminder of the immense responsibility held by private security person...

A disturbing event in Baltimore serves as a stark reminder of the immense responsibility held by private security personnel and the companies that employ them.

Video evidence shows a bouncer, employed by a contracted security company, using extreme force against a college student—choking him and slamming his head through a car window. The Cross Street Public House venue has since severed ties with the security provider and banned the individual, and a police investigation is underway.

Beyond the immediate legal and community concerns, this incident forces a necessary professional conversation about Use-of-Force Protocols and Liability.

Key questions we're exploring on The Sentinel Mindset:

The Legal Standard: What constitutes "reasonable force" for a contracted security operative in a situation like this?

Vicarious Liability: What are the legal and reputational risks for a business that contracts external security?

Industry Accountability: How can the security industry better ensure proper training, vetting, and de-escalation techniques to prevent such events?

This case is a critical study for business owners, risk management professionals, legal experts, and security firms. The actions of one individual can have devastating consequences for the victim, the perpetrator, and the businesses involved.

I invite my network to share their professional insights. Where should the line be drawn, and what steps can businesses take to mitigate such risks?
